Pagan is such an umbrella term. Three of my best friends are pagan, but none of us believe even similar things. I'm a Celtic Recon, friend is Hindu/Pagan blend, other is Roman/Celtic blend. I merely wonder what kind of pagans we have represented at this board. Wiccan, druid, recon...?
Please, elaborate. Since Celts and Romans have been mortal enemies for over 2000 years, I'd love to know what "Roman/Celtic Blend" means. And Recon (Ricon) means you are the titular head of a tribe of Celtic kinsman (which is OK since Celts worshipped their queens even 2000 years ago and warriors, male and female, fought side by side Or did you mean Reconstructed? Neo Pagan?). So of what tribe are you queen? And for you doubters, it was not unusual at all for a 16-year-old to be queen. Vercingetorix, the great one, was in his early 20s when he united most of the tribes of Gaul against Julius Ceasar in the first century. Please. Grace us with your biography? Do you wear black velvet and carry a pentagram with you always? Would you take a human life to retain your freedom? Watch your brother, sister, parents die in battle and be proud? Yes, I have had my fill of mead and wannabes are really irritating this eve...
Short answer; solitary Pagan More detailed answer..... I have a deeply held conviction that people should embrace their ethnic roots and history, instead of playing with other peoples. (white people doing voodoo seems a bit silly imo). So my focus is Celtic (specifically Welsh & Irish*), as that's my heritage. The rest of my ancestry is Scottish, so am looking into that too. *Actually I'm not Irish, but am just drawn to the culture; past life thing maybe? There are bound to be some other influences. I agree with most of the Buddhist ethics, though don't profess to be Buddhist. Was baptised Anglican and raised humanist, so that's got to have had an effect (albeit rejected on a concious level). I'm pretty cynical, and fairly agnostic about otherkin and such. Also solitary because I don't play well with others and wouldn't want to compromise over important things like this. Refuse to call myself wiccan in an attempt to disassociate myself with the fluffy bunnies, and to be honest there's so much of wicca I just don't buy. (the threefold law is IMHO total bunk) Don't call myself a witch either. I haven't reached that level of skill and feel it would be dishonest to claim otherwise. It's a work in progress. PS what exactly is recon? Just never heard that term before.
Okay...roman/celtic thing. I don't really know quite how she does that. I think her reasoning was that the romans brought their gods to the British Isles when they took it over. I guess I'm a Celtic Reconstructionist, if it makes you happier. Not a queen, thank you, but I like the Celtic gods and the way the Celts did their religion, as far as we can tell. I don't claim to do it exactly the way the Celts did it. I focus on the Welsh because that's a part of my ancestry and I happened to be deeply attracted to it even before I found that out. I don't claim to have the perfect, exact reconstruction of the Celtic religion. I don't wear the black velvet, and I own a pentagram but I rarely wear it. And if "wannabes" annoy you, don't mess with them.
Forgiveness, sister. Drunk angry posts are not fun to read the next day, even less so to be the target. I am an Iron Age Celtic Pagan, and a neoPagan. My point on the Celt/Roman issue: The Romans mostly exterminated the Celts from Gaul and the British Isles, and enslaved the survivors. Even though they (the Romans) were pagans themselves, the penalty for Druidry was death on the spot. Even now, at the annual Pennsic War, we trade friendly death threats with the Romans. So I would be very interested to see how there could be a Roman/Celtic blend tribe of Pagans. It would be a curiosity similar to Jews for Jesus. And no vodka for me for a while...
I'm not quite sure how my friend handles it. She works with the Roman gods, I know, and Celtic faeries, maybe? Um...I don't know. I rarely work with her. We did an Ostara ritual at my church (Unitarian Universalist) but we didn't do anything very specific. Yeah, Jews for Jesus, Roman/Celtic...hard to reconcile as I see. All forgiveness granted.
I'm not a wiccan/witch I guess I'm a solitary Neo-Pagan (I was raised agnostic). I've always been interested in Greek mythology and how they lived, it's what I feel most attached to (I'm such a mediterranean girl, lol) but I like to learn about other paganisms/religions too.
You Brits are so lucky. At least your co workers don't ask you what particular animal (or whose infant child) you will be sacrificing this weekend. Damned intolerant Americans...
I used to be wiccan, then I realized that it didn't give me much room for spiritual growth, you know? Right now, I'm sort of a free interpreter. I believe in a divine power I call "divinity" that can recognize god ideas. Like if I say Jesus, jesus represents certain things, right? Divinity recognizes this. I found that every religion can be equally proven and disproven. For all gods to exist together is impossible, to forget some is impossible, so this is what i am now. I sort of search for the answers. I consider myself mostly pagan because I do accept a Pantheon, and certain Gods and Goddesses help me along the path to understanding (or at least the god ideas, since they are neither real nor fake)
I'm very much into Celtic Wicca, and I'm solitary as well. There is a coven I visit every once in a while, but I'm not really into the group thing. It's nice to know them though.
The romans didnt "bring" any gods, they renamed the ones that was already there. Celtic/Roman is about the worst combo i could imagine. I am an animist, no prefix. I worship the Mother, and the gods of my ancestors. That means that I worship Celtic gods, does that mean i am a "Celtic animist"? no. Rather than mimick the things my ancestors did in their religion, i seek to do what they really did, worship their gods, as best the could, within their culture. They didnt try to copy what their ancestors did, they just applied it to their time. I also revear my local spirits, be they nature or otherwise. Thats what I do. I have some more in depth musings on my ancestoral beliefs in my journal if youre interested.
lol, that wouldda been kinda rude if I didnt know you was funnin asatru here, but i look at it as more of a philosphy than a religeon
I' ma mix of many religions... Buddhist(not exactly Pagan, butheh! ^^), Wiccan(many different forms), Daoist, and Shamanic(once again, I practice many forms of this as well).
Wow, quite a mix, i am very interested in your shamanic practices, what are some of the many forms that you practice? Is your "daoism" of the American Phoenetic Discipline? Just curious, i find your mix of belifs interesting. {that was sarcasm}
My beliefs are somewhat diverse. Its a combo of Native American beliefs (in my blood) / Satanism / and animism. Yes I realize that NA and Satanic beliefs can contradict eachother. But I incorporate certain parts and don't claim a single religious title.
