a lot of times, dark hair needs to be bleached before coloring it. it's difficult to color over something dark... anyway, if the box said it could be used on really dark hair, you probably will have to leave it on longer. you can check strands of hair for progress... like on the back of your neck, wipe off the color and see if it has lightened... know what i mean? i have thick, and dark hair (not black, more of a medium to dark brown) so i have to leave it on for ages... you can get a "truer" color that way as well. also... even permanent haircolors fade, so i'm thinking semi-permanent isn't going to color your hair much at all.... in fact, i don't know if anything semi-permanent is going to work on your hair.... might give it a tinge, if you get an actual "color" like red or purple, but trying to go lighter isn't going to work...... you hair can't really fade much from a lighter color to a darker one... after the semi-permanence wears off, make sense?... i hope that's right, anyway, if i'm wrong, please let me know... but that's how i understand it.

the semi permanent ones are really hard to get onto darker hair!!! either you bleach before hand, or take a permantent one which do have some bleach-agent in them. But out of my experience, I can tell you, lighter then your own ONLY works with bleach. Especially dark brown/black. Check the package, it usually sais for which types of hair it is suitable. And leaving it on longer is not always an option. Never put it on longer then the longest duration labled on the package, otherwise you may burn your scalp wich is pretty bad.

I recommend that if you need to bleach it go to a salon... Trust me!! My hair fell out when i bleached it several months ago... It was horrible.. I really wish I had just sucked it up and paid the hairdresser to bleach my hair for me...

a semi-permanent dye isnt strong enough to color your hair if it's dark brown naturally.. my suggestion, if you want it to be a carmel golden brown color, is to get a bleach kit, another box of the caramel color - permanent this time - and ask a friend to help you.. with the bleach kit, you'll have to pay close attention to the time and check your hair often to ensure that you dont over process.. now, the box of the permanent caramel brown is just for back up, because if you pay close attention to the color changes during the bleaching process, you might end up getting the color you want without having to put the other color on too..

also, if you end up doing this, dont do it all in one day.. extremely harsh on the hair.. bleach one day and deep condition afterward, let it rest for at least one day (two if at all possible) and then put the other color on..

    hope this helps

Yeah, there's no way you're gonna get your dark brown hair to automatically go to a lighter color like that, especially with a semi-permanent dye. If you really want the color, you're going to have to lighten it somehow first. The dye you're putting on now is only made to be absorbed into the hair to make it that color. You're expecting it to not only be absorbed, but to strip your hair of its natural dark color in order for it to get the new color you want. It's not gonna happen. So unless you want to go to a hair salon and get it bleached or what-have-you, I suggest you either leave your hair alone or dye it an even darker color...like black...haha. Actually, I did the same thing. My hair is really dark and I wanted to put purple strips in it a while back. Yeah, nothing happened. So instead, I dyed it black (which is cooler anyway :)) haha.

I hate to sound like everyone else, but yeah, you're not going to get any change in color if your hair is that dark and it's only semi-permanant. Those semi dyes don't work very well on most people.
The easiest way to go is to bleach your hair and then a few days later, dye it the color that you want. The only downfall is that bleaching your hair is death on healthy hair. It sucks. There are ways to get it lighter w/o bleaching, but I'd recommend leaving that up to a hair dresser. You have to know the rigth amount of levels that you need to go up to get the exact color that you want.
    Good luck!

i used to dye my hair. heres my experience:

if you want to go lighter you have to do permanent. semi permanent didnt do anything to my hair except give it a tint sometimes, and that was rare.

If you do permanent and are going to care about roots and keep dying it... well my hair is still growing out because a lot of it is beyond repair. if i dont use a hair mask twice a week i get this straw-like textured knotty-ness going on.

id suggest hair henna if you just want a tint to it. if you do want to go lighter you might want to either do hilights- thats what i did to help the roots grow out- its much easier on your hair, or just get it dyed professionally.

so yeah, dye is now my enemy. im going back to hair henna like i used to.
