Hello. I'm 18, 19 in June. I plan to start college Fall semester of this year. My problem is, I did really horrible in high school (like a 1.1 GPA), rarely ever tried, was going through issues at home, and generally did horrible on tests, couldnt concentrate, and didnt do schoolwork/homework. I contribute most of my failure, if not all, in highschool due to the fact that 1) I had problems with anger, family, etc etc, and 2) Major concentration problems Now, I have fixed corrected the habits and patterns that led to both issues through proper diet, meditation, exercise, and will. I started homeschool a few years back, and have a 3.5 GPA, Honor roll with Hope Scholarship, 2 courses left to go. My problem is that I am afraid of doing really poorly on my SATs, and more importantly really bad in college. How hard exactly is college? I plan on doing the Nursing program at a state university
If you are affraid of the SAT, just plan on taking the ACT as well. It is much more straight forward than the SAT. As far as how hard college is, it depends on your major. In my opinion, generally those in the sciences work probably four or five times harder than those in the humanities. I am currently taking two courses, Botany and environmental science... I spend 7 hours a week in botany, and 5 hours a week in env. science, just in class.... then I work on the two classes about 30-50 hours a week outside of class.
As long as you aren't in an incredibly hard major then college isn't much more difficult than high school. If you can get a 3.5 in high school you'll do fine in college, but you will need to study. This shouldn't be so hard though because, theoretically, you are studying stuff you enjoy. If you don't enjoy it, think twice about it. I guess my only word of caution is don't go overboard with drugs and alcohol. There are always people who fail out because they can't control their new found freedom. As for the SATs, buy a book of sample tests and take a few if you are really worried about it. And if you dont do as well as you hoped, you can always take it again.
College is certainly what you make of it... I procrastinate...I wait until the last minute to do...EVERYTHING. Which is fun, until you actually HAVE to do it, then things get stressful. You can do the absolute bare minimum (like me) and get by just fine, or you can do everything you possibly can and do fantastically well. YOu must be balanced. Geez, I really shouldnt' be giving someone advice about college...
thanks for the advice I will keep working on my homeschool, studying for SATs, and hope for the best. I'm really motivated (only because I want to become a Nurse) so I imagine I will be very dedicated. I just hope I'm smart enough.
It's not about being smart...if you're dedicated and passionate...sometimes that's all you need to get through it.
if you're going to a state school, then it should be just as easy as high school. mine was even easier for the first two years. also if you're going to a state school then your SAT or ACT doesn't need to be very good to get in, and i know my school even gives scholarships to people who do only a little above average and you attribute most of your failure, not contribute it.
Go to Georgia Southern... it's like 13th grade. But really that's only because of all the partying. You only get out of it what you put into it, and nursing has a really high job demand so you shouldn't have much of a problem getting straight to work after college. And again, if you're going to a state school (other than UGA, which you need above a 1200 on the old SAT and at least a 3.7 or 3.8 to get in, ditto with Tech except math is more important), you could totally bomb SATs and still get in. I know people who got 900s on the old SAT and still got into GA Southern, Valdosta State, and other Georgia colleges. Don't stress, you'll be fine. Just stay motivated.
