Sometimes publicity is what gets the job done. Besides, like most PETA members I also support other groups. And I would like to point out that many so-called mainstream groups, including HSUS and Fund for Animals work very closely with PETA.

I never said one diet was better than the other. I simply said I will be raising my kids as vegans. When I said "properly", I meant that health wise. I sincerely don't care if other people cause themselves to have health problems due to their diets. Their deaths will take care of the overpopulation problem.

The scientific research has proven that the vegan diet is perfectly healthy for every age and stage of life. Not better or worse, just healthy.

Have you ever been to Florida or any of the other deep south states? The school systems here are HORRIBLE, especially in the smaller cities like Titusville. The bigger cities may be over crowded, but the school systems is MUCH better.

I would never allow my kids to go to any small school, period. I want them to either homeschool or private school. My fiance has lived here since he was 13 (before that he lived in Lexington, KY...which (at least at that time) had an excellent public school system) and with the exception of the first 3 months he was here he was always homeschooled. Why? Because the schools here are so understaffed and poor that the teachers couldn't teach properly.

It is not self-righteous to want better for your children and yourself.

The reason why HSUS works with PeTA now is because the president is a PeTA member. This of course is no surprise considering that HSUS has been clashing with animal-welfarists for decades anyways.

HSUS is not the same as a locally based SPCA.

All publicity has done for PeTA is make them a bigger joke and make the rest of us look like turdballs. They do not address important issues. They create insulting and outlandish ads that belittle human tragedy and plight.

They are completely unethical and immoral, rather amoral since I don't think a single person with a conscience works for PeTA.Ingrid Newkirk is a nazi on the most basic level. She'd rather see hundreds of sick children die then inconvenience a friggin rat.

I hope one day you wake up out of your dellusional world and see who you are supporting. Misanthropy,hate-mongering,exploitation,and general stupidity.

OK it is a myth that PETA doesn't care about humans. We are for protecting the rights of ALL members of the animal kingdom, humans included.

FACT:pETA works to protect the rights of ALL members of the animal kingdom, both non-human and human. Ingrid Newkirk herself explained this in an interview on Salon.com....
"How do you respond to people who claim PETA cares about animals at the expense of caring about humans?"
"Our perspective is that if anyone says that, they can't point to a single incident in which we care more about one animal, human or other. Secondly, vegetarianism is a diet that stops people from getting heart disease, cancer and stroke. Veganism is a diet that stops children from getting ear infections and colic. Vivisection is wasting money that could go to a birth defects registry instead of to addicting monkey mothers to cocaine. There isn't anything we do that doesn't benefit us as human beings -- we simply have to shift the marketplace to a compassionate lifestyle from a callous lifestyle."

Read the interview in full at...http://dir.salon.com/people/conv/2001/04/30/newkirk/index.html?pn=3

PETA does many things to help the human members of the animal kingdom, including giving old fur coats to the homeless and to war refugees, fighting against environmentally destructive industries like factory farming, and encouraging a healthy vegan diet. Many PETA members (myself included) are also members of HR groups. To be AR is to be HR.

I really don't care what you or anyone else thinks about PETA, although I do get annoyed when people don't find out all the facts before expressing an opinion. I will always support them...I have for 15 years. Although I do find it interesting that you had to resort to name calling and rudeness to try to convince me otherwise.

And negative 50 points for calling anyone a Nazi unless you have absolute proof.

Also, what do you find to be the "important" issues?

About the SPCA...while they are not one of my charities (I tend to be more radical) I have no problem with them. There is room for everyone.

The deep south is dirt poor.We all know that. But some of the largest cities are there.Atlanta has a terrible school system..New Orleans is crappy, Miami,Jacksonville...those schools have nothing. They have no money.

But the south isn't just brokedown towns and dirty bigger cities. There are ALOT of wealthier communities with excellent public schools.

But that's the south.I live in northeast Ohio. Cleveland has a horrendous school system.Abysmal. But the surrounding suburbs and small townships(farming communities)have top-notch school districts.

Most of Ohios top schools are in "hick" country. These kids could blast the smartest Clevelander or even Beachwood kid out of the water with their smarts.Massilon,Ohio is a prime example.A farming town, mostly corn, squash, and cattle. Their football is so incredible that movies are based on them.Just recently the school produced more then one student to get a 1600 on the SATs.Almost all of their students go onto college..even if it's just community college because they are needed on the family farm.

You can't generalize all smaller school districts(namely farming districts)as being subpar to urban schools. Alot of private schools can't even match the education of many "hick" schools.

Ohio right now is suffering a bit(from past decades) because our republican government keeps slashing education funds. The lack of quality education that is about to happen has nothing to do with city-kids versus country-kids. It has everything to do with not putting our youth first.

But grade-wise/test-scorewise...most city-kids are years behind country-kids because the weathier people move to the country and support their school systems...while the poorer people struggle in the big cities and have to choose between medical care for their children and not paying city taxes.

Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler
chickens will die this year in slaughter houses.
    -Ingrid Newkirk (PETA)
    (_Washington_Post_, Nov 13, 1983)

I'm sorry but I know many Aushwitz survivors who cried at this comment. Hilter used to make similar comparisons.

Even if animal tests produced a cure for AIDS, "We'd be against it."
    -Ingrid Newkirk, PETA
    (_Washington_Post_, May 30, 1989)

So....fuck all those damned African children! Rats and guinea pigs have rights too!

    Sounds pretty nazish to me.

Oh and let us remember PeTA's crusade against St.Jude's children's research hospital.

    Nazi is as Nazi does.

You make blanket statement after blanket statement... and then you say that YOU find it annoying when people don't bother to check their facts?!

Maybe you thought I wouldn't catch your hypocracies, as I was educated in the country... where all schools suck, according to you (and all the research you must have done before saying it).

Exactly what research have you done to back up any of the things you have said? Or have you just been taking PETA's word for it? Have you conducted research into all of the country school systems? Have you actually independently and unbiasly researched anything? Have you taken into account anything other than PETA propaganda?

I think what really bothers me is how you feel so strongly about animal rights but bitch about the country so much. The country is where are the freaking animals are! How do you plan to ever "save" a single pig from your big city? And if you were so repulsed by the farm life, why do you even care anyway? You hate the farm, but the farm is where you find these animals!

This logic of yours is interesting, and not at all like normal Earth logic.

The SPCA is not a charity. It's a public service.Government employees work for the SPCA.Those animal cops are actual police officers. However, they do depend on donations since the city limits their funding.

Unlike PeTA...the SPCA actually goes into places and REMOVES ANIMALS FROM NEGLECTFUL OR ABUSIVE SITUATIONS.They administer health care and place adoptable animals in loving homes.

How can you call yourself an animal advocate if you'd rather support KFC protests over a group that directly helps animals?

    Please explain this rationale?

"Unlike PeTA...the SPCA actually goes into places and REMOVES ANIMALS FROM NEGLECTFUL OR ABUSIVE SITUATIONS.They administer health care and place adoptable animals in loving homes."

That doesn’t even make sense, the SPCA only helps pets, not all animals, they don't go into factory farms and remove animals imprisoned in tiny cages. Why is this? Because it is legal to hurt 'farm' animals - where it is illegal to do the same abuse to a pet, it is legal to keep 'farm' animals in cages so small they can't move, it is legal to keep a pig in a cage so small that she can't turn around. It is legal to hurt farm animals in many ways, and what abuse is not legal is usually done as well, ever heard of downer cows?

It is not the SPCA who is helping these farm animals. They do a good job helping mostly pets, but they don’t help farm animals like Peta and other ANIMAL RIGHTS groups do.

The SPCA are not the ones who get evidence of animal abuse in vivisection labs either.

Bravo to PETA and other groups who get evidence of animal abuse in labs and factory farms and slaughterhouses, helping the animals that the SPCA doesn’t seem to do anything for.

It is logical to see that PETA and other AR groups help ALL animals, something that is good. Keep to saving pets if you want, that is a good cause also, but there is enough room to help all animals, not just pets. That might mean you would have to think about what cruelty you directly support diet wise.

*waits for........but harvesters kill animals......bleh *winds up old record*, most crops are used to feed FARM animals, most field animals die for the meat industry, not for vegan food.

Dude, I'm Jewish and my grandparents are Holocaust survivors. Let me give you a little background info on PETA's "Holocaust on your Plate" campaign (which btw is now over)....

    1. It was Holocaust survivor Issac Singer who first made the comparison between animals on factory farms and Jews in concentration camps.
    2. Issac Singer's grandson was a very prominient supporter of the campaign.

Now, let me address your other comments...

"Even if animal tests produced a cure for AIDS, "We'd be against it."
    -Ingrid Newkirk, PETA
    (_Washington_Post_, May 30, 1989)"

Yes, because all animal experiments do is slow down progress. And let me mention here that many prominent physicians; including the founder of the Mayo Clinic, and Dr's Salk and Sabin have spoken out against animal experimentation. Also, many prominent med schools have gotten rid of the animal labs. This is 2005. We are advanced enough to find cures without killing non-human (or human for that matter) animals.

"Oh and let us remember PeTA's crusade against St.Jude's children's research hospital."

    I never heard about this.

Ok at least we sort of agree on one thing! :)

I must address this though:"Almost all of their students go onto college..even if it's just community college because they are needed on the family farm."

Ok what about the kids who want to leave the farm? To me a parent trying to pressure their kid into giving up book smarts and a good career is a form of emotional abuse.

Because all animals deserve rights and protection. From humans to bees to cats to everything in between. I should point out here that PETA doesn't run animal shelters because its an INTERNATIONAL organization. Our focus is different. I mean, that would be like if you said that Amnesty International (of which I'm also a member) was bad because they don't run a homeless shelter, or that Alley Cat Allies (of which I'm also a member) is bad because they protect cats instead of horses.

Both PETA and the SPCA have their own focuses, just like every other charity. That doesn't make them bad, just different. Just like you and I aren't bad, we're just different.

when did anyone say anything about parents forcing their children to stay on the farm?

people who chose agriculture as a career often have university degrees in agriculture. both animal husbandry and crop farming require an understanding of science, technology and mathematics. the 'dumb farmer' is an insulting stereotype.

CHOOSING agriculture as a career is NOT giving up "book smarts" or a "good career". In my case farming is a very happily and enthusiastically CHOSEN career!
As a vegan do you have any idea as to who grows your food? Do you think uneducated idiots grow your food? Or do you think they only send "vegetable-farmers- who-will-only-ever-market-their-produce-to-educated-vegan-buyers" to college? Most small scale family farms produce several different types of produce to remain economically viable. This means when you buy your veggies, you are often supporting a farm family that also makes a living from animal products. I live in a farming community and am a farmer myself. I don't know any farmers who only sell vegan produce. I know families who sell garlic, flowers and honey. I know families who sell organic herbs, lamb and wool. I know families that sell cranberries and beef. I know families who sell broccoli and emu.

It's virtually impossible to support one kind of farming without at least unintentionally suppporting other types. If you think that one type of farmer (ie veggy farm) is smart and another type of farmer (ie meat) is dumb, well that niave thinking. The majority of us are too involved with many different types of farming to reject and put down the next guy down the road. We're in this togeteher and the only bad kind of farm is the big greedy corporate factories that threaten caring and traditional family farms.

Luckily most veggy people are our friends and love their country neighbors! The hardest thing about this job is the hatred we get from people we don't know. These days everyone seems to hate farmers. It's sad. :(

I really have no clue as to what you mean by blanket statement.

The only thing that I've had to provide facts for so far is that PETA doesn't care about the human members of the animal kingdom. I provided proof that we do. I was also asked to provide proof that the vegan diet is healthy, which I did. With the fact about PETA being for the rights of all members of the animal kingdom, including humans, I simply quoted Ingrid Newkirk and provided a list of some of the things PETA does to help humans. Lets all remember that AR does apply to us.

As for the vegan thing, I quoted the scientific facts from the ADA.

If you are talking about the education thing, it is simply my observation. I have always found small town schools to be too broke and full of unqualified teachers. It is actually worse here in the South, I will admit that.

I have been an activist long enough to know that you should always try to get the facts from a source outside your charity...if you can. And this applies with all of my charities. This is what a good activist does.

What does my being glad that I don't live in the country have to do with AR? I don't live in the Darfor region of the Sudan either. Does that mean I shouldn't care about those people?

The problem is that I see a lot of kids down here (and it may be different in the Midwest although from what I remember it isn't) are being pressured by their parents not to go to college. I realize that agriculture does require book smarts, but some of these kids are being told not to bother with it. Or worse, some are being told that going to college is anti-Christian. Maybe these people are just idiots?
