I went to the doctor today cuz I had a sore throat, runny nose, fever, ect... I thought it might be a bacterial infection, but it turned out to be just a cold. My question is, are 4 medications really necessary just for a cold? I was pescribed phen. with codeine, an antihistamine, amitex (a pseudoephedrine), and darvocet. Btw, what exactly does darvocet do? cuz there a bunch of warnings on the bottle. I'm not a big fan of medications, and the only reason I went to the doc was cuz I was afraid it was an infection, which could've been a problem with finals this week. -al
When I was a teenager, I used to get migrane headcahes so severe that I would at times pass out, or be unable to see straight due to the pain. I was miserable. My doctor had me on Darvocet for the headaches as needed. It seemed to work with the pain, but made me feel really tired out and spacey. It sure does sound like you were really over medicated though. Especially for a cold. Hope you feel better though!
The doc might have prescribed it to help with coughing. Some narcotics are great at cough suppresion esp Codiene.
well I took one darvocet and 5ml of cough syrup last night around 7. I feel better, aside from the fact that it knocked me out for 12 hours, but I guess I needed the rest. My sore throat is gone, but I'm still semi-conjested. Yeah, I really don't understand why she gave me all these meds. Once she told me that my blood work came back negative(I had mono two months ago), I was ready to leave and buy an otc medication. Then she prescribed all these meds... oh well. Thanks for the replies, everyone. -al
i think you find most of the good cough medications are a mix of many of those. codeine to stop you coughing and to stop pain antihistamines to stop sneezing and runnyness pseudoephedrine to open up your lungs and obivously this mix wants to stop pain so they added darvocet not overmedicated at all for a severe cold at that point. though you might have been able to treat it quickly before it escallated, unless you jsut woke up wioth it one day
Darv is not good as an antitussive. Codiene is more effective. I have never heard of anyone getting darvocet for a cold. (btw, sudafed doesn't "open up the lungs" it decreases swelling in the nasal passages, so you feel less stuffy. It does nothing for the lungs.) Are you in some pain? Because I can't see why you would get Darvocet. If you are in a lot of pain, go ahead and take it, but if you aren't save them for pain. If you can.
sometimes docs prescribe pain killers for no reason. I got liquid lorcet for strep throat once. I am positive that it was just the doc wishing me merry xmas (twas dec 16th)
I have actually seen people get pain killers for strep. Strep can be painful. Some people cannot eat or drink, the throat is so painful. Usually I see people who NEED painkillers not getting them. Never had a doctor give me any as a present.
yeah it was the second worst case of strep I ever had. for the worst case I got....a shot and a pat on the ass.......I am military so usually they wont give me painkillers.
well I told her I had a sore throat, but it wasn't keeping me from eating. It's funny cuz when I had mono (which was only 2 months ago) I could barely eat a thing and the doctor never prescribed any pain killers. (btw, these are doctors from my university)
sorry i confused ephedrine with pseudoepherine. ephedrine is used to relieve asthma attacks, it affect the lungs. usually these tpyes of cough medicines have paracetamol though (acemetorphn or whatever its called in america) i guess thats subsitited with darvocet
