For the past month my cat has been losing his hair. Half the time he pulls chunks of it out. It happens to his lower back where his tail starts, and then goes a little down his tail. He will also scratch at the rest of his body so bad that he has scabs. We give him baths normally (but not too much) and we use a good shampoo on him. We have changed his food, and his shampoo a couple of times to see if that was the problem, but nothing has worked.

Does anyone know why this happens, and what I can do about it?

I am to the point where I don't even want to touch him!!! It's so sad!

Maybe he has got flees. Give him some anti-flee stuff. A normal bath wont help.

Fleas like the lower back and bum/tail areas of the cat. Your best bet would be to buy a flea comb and see what comes up. I believe that mange also presents itself in the lower back area more commonly.
What kind of food does he eat?

Our cat had real bad skin when we got her, we thought we were killing the fleas but we weren't- the anti flea stuff we were using was cheaper and it was not killing them properly......we did not know this and spent ages and heaps of money changing her diet to try find allergies. This new cat has a very bad reaction to any kind of scratch or bite (e.g flea bite ) on her skin, so she was itching all over and had scabs sprinkled all over her body but mainly on her back, her back was just terrible and scabby - our other cat doesnt have anything like this, she never even itches let alone get scabs.

We got the best flea treatment and this has cleared up her skin, perfectly. She has to have every 3 weeks, 1 week earlier than the packet states. But it works...no more scabs or sore skin.

I would make sure the anti flea product you are using is the BEST one available. That it is the type that you put onto his neck area and that it kills all stages ( eggs etc)of fleas...but make sure it is the best one you can get- some are cheaper and don't work as well.

If having the best anti flea treatment doesnt help you might want to try and see if it is a food allergy causing him to itch. You should go to a vet about it. The vet sells prescription kibble foods for common food allergies and also vegetarian and venison foods are good for it, it is something to do with the protein structures and how they trigger a allergic reaction or something.

I would take him to a vet - and get a expert opinion

I would not use a flea comb on areas of his skin that are broken and sore. Get the best flea treatment there is, one that kills all stages of fleas.

yes if fleas are a problem then he is probably allergic to the bites. Some animals are and some arent. If that's the case then once the fleas are cleared up his skin will return to normal and the hair will grow back. Check him over really well and if you see fleas try to get to a vet tommorrow if you can and pick up either Frontline or Frontline Plus (this one's better as it kills all stages of the flea) or Advantage. I think it's about $35 for 3 months treatment...something like that.....but it works. If you don't see any fleas then you should take him to a vet ASAP. Hope he feels better soon:D

Could be stress, I have a cat theat was seperated from her boyfriend (one of my other cats) for a few months after I moved, and she would lick and chew the hair until their was a huge sore. When the cats were reunited she stopped. The vet said anti-anxiety drugs would have helped. My mom's cat does this too, but his is severe skin allergies.
