I was just wondering if any of you stop to let people cross. I have gained a lot more respect for doing that since i am now in college, and realize how bad it is in my town. 3 kids have been hit at crosswalks in the past month here.

Its just kind of ridiculous because on campus it is a 15mph speed limit and a very slow steady stream of traffic drives through the student zone, and NOBODY will stop to let me cross, not even when they are going like 10 miles an hour in traffic. Its not like i am jaywalking damnit. I try to stop whenever possible to let people go, i kinda thought it was the law, like a person at the cross walk has the right of way.. maybe not. So since nobody in my town stops at them, i was just wondering if ANYONE did. I know its stupid. Just gimme some hope here.

once herb had to leap over the hood of a car, use his right hand to push away from the windshield and propel himself over the car, in order to avoid the car that suddenly accelerated into him at a stop sign

so where's the safety in a cross walk? lol
its more deluding if a person thinks they are safe and aren't paying attention

It's rare if anyone stops at crosswalks in my neck of the woods, then again, it's rare if you see anyone waiting to walk across them here.

In my town we have stop signs at every intersection and so we are required to stop at the crosswalks. The problem is that pedestrians never use the crosswalks, they just walk out into the street anywhere and they never look and so I am always driving and then someone leaps out into the street out of nowhere and I have to slam to a stop.

People here are much more likely to be hit by a bicycle however, they never stop at the stop signs and are usually going much faster than any of the cars ever are.

well sometimes those pedestrians just think they own the road and walk out right in front of you..especially when there is a sidewalk right there, but yet they want to walk in the middle of the street..to me, thats a sign they want to get hit :D

I am not like that, but I know what you are talkin about. They act like because you are driving the death-mobile that you should get out of their way.

i live in a college town and people jump out into the road a LOT. i do stop at the crosswalks sometimes, because i know it's frustrating to be waiting to cross and nobody stops. but it's also annoying to stop for pedestrians and then a million ppl cross the street and don't let YOU go. it's like they just keep coming... so either way you're kinda screwed around here. this is pertaining to older ppl though, college students namely. i always stop for kids around schools. my sister was hit by a stupid guy who wasn't paying attention at a four way stop one morning.

You have the right away. Don't let a little thing like a 2k lb vehicle moving at 10mph stop you from walking. Hell, if they hit you it'll just help pay for all those loans you have for school ;)

This one time I was driving through town and there was this car in the lane next to mine going really slow and so I was going to pass them and the sped up really fast as soon as I got close and then they sped through a crosswalk/stop sign without stopping and almost killed some people.... and it was just to prevent me from passing them. They really need to get over themselves apparently.

But yeah, around here, there is no way to watch out for the pedestrians... they are all maniacs and can't be predicted.... of course, I am one of those maniacs.

I usually stop, unless I'm in a hurry or something. Here though.. the traffic is just crazy, no one ever bothers to use cross-walks and people just walk all over the place and there are lots of buses everywhere and the busdrivers drive like crazy and.. yeah. :D
