I was just watching my local news and heard a story that upset me so much I feel I need to do something about it. I live in Connecticut, about 40 minutes away from one of the richest cities in America, Greenwich.

A common problem in the northeast, Canada Geese have invaded the streets of Greenwich, causing traffic problems and pollution from the incredible amount of waste that these geese produce. After watching the news tonight, I realized that there is a proposal in Greenwich to KILL 200 of these animals. While I understand the people of Greenwich's concerns, killing 200 of the earth's inhabitants is not right!

I ask that anyone who is upset as much as I am about this proposal PLEASE help me avoid this from happening. I am planning to email the local newspapers tomorrow and hopefully get an artical published in the "speak out" portion of the paper. If anyone would be willing to spend just a few minutes to email the first-selectman it would be greatly appreciated. Just go to http://www.greenwichct.org/contactus.asp and click on any of the 3 names listed. Your help is greatly needed and appreciated!! Thank you!

i sent an email to jim lash. or i think that was his name. Your are right that is totally wrong. I told him to help your city think about what they are about to do. Mother nature didnt make these birds so you could shed their blood. i didnt even know animals could pollute the earth like we do. and i said something like its like killing 200 people because of how bad we ruin the earth and pollute it. I also said something like dont help ruin our earth help save it without killing, violence isnt the answer.
so thats kind of what i wrote but in a different way. I think you should go ahead and write the paper. get your thoughts out to the world. maybe you could even get on t.v for it and really get the messege out. i hope the geese live. tell me what happens! i need to know if i made a difference and if your plans worked to save thses poor animals. PEACE

Something similar is going on in either Wisconsin or Minnesota. Except with a certain breed of cats. There are cats everywhere in this town and they are trying to pass a law that anyone with a license to carry a gun will be legally allowed to shoot these cats and "eliminate the problem". I have been searching for a phone number or email address but unfortunately I have had no luck. I need to find out exactly where this is.

    :(

Do you think if I asked nicely,I could get one of the goose corpses shrink-wrapped and delivered?

I have a few great recipes in my Joy of Cooking.

yeh cool, lets not kill any geese or cats - we like them!

but do you cry every day for all the cows and chickens that get massacred in slaughterhouses all over the world? or do you just decide that we cant kill things when its all over the news? dont get me wrong, i love animals, but i love them even more when they're covered in barbeque sauce. yummy:D

worry about the problems facing your fellow human beings before you get all up in arms about a few animals. people die of hunger and disease every single minute while animal rights protestors tell us not to hurt gerbils.

if i had a gun to the head of a person and a gun to the head of a seal cub, which would you let me kill?

If there's THAT BAD of a problem, chances are that it's throwing the ecosystem out of balance, which isn't good either. I honestly have no problem with a temporary geese hunting period of time with all the geeze then being donated to starving and homeless children.

Thousands of animals a DAY are killed purely for sport. If that's not an area of concern and protest than 200 geese shouldn't be a concern either.

I read this post. and yes it hurts to know that these geese and cats will more than likely be killed.... We all now the way of thinking of saving all forms of life and preserving the earth.. but think of it this way....where this goose city is... I mean its like a town right.. so driving down the road in your VW with your 3 kids.... then WOAH GEESE in the road.. Tommy has to go to school Eddie is screaming cause he's tierd and Allie is crying because she wants to touch the duckies.. Now your late cause of 5 gazillion geese.. Or you have super nice car or not even a nice car and one moring theres geese and their poo all over your car... Think of the lakes or river that ALL these Geese are hanging out in.. what about the small fish population or the tadpoles? Ever seen Goose poop?? Its HUGE stinky and takes a while to decompose.... So i can understand the need to get rid of them.... U cant relocate these birds they come back.. so by shooting them lets just hope they take these geese and give them to a food pantry or some needy families...
As goes the cats.. I heard about this too.. Well people dont like these cats and 1 female can breed and amazing amount of offspring... So what I heard they are tring to start a program for these alley cats of spaying and nueturing.. But then u have the.. Dont harm anything for anyreason people.. well u just cant have a town riddled by cats.. its just not safe or healthy.. so either its fixing these cats or fixing them for good..

I think people think to much.. its all a chain we are all one. but in nature there wouldnt be this problem so yes sometimes mans hand must do the work of momma earth....

Hunting is ecologically sound. The reason a herd is too large, is because we took out their preditors. Because we have created an atmosphere where coyotes and wolves, bears, mountain lions, ect. cannot live, we have to play the preditor. You may not agree with it, but once you walk across a starving herd of young deer, who cannot reach the plants along the edge of the forest because all the other thousand deer have eaten it, you'll feel terrible for those starving deer. And they will keep multiplying if the females continue to populate, which means more starving deer, angry farmers, people killed on the road... ect. Geese are the same way. Where do you think E-Coli comes from? Goose poop. What do geese eat? Mowed grass. So urban areas are a wonderland for Geese. Unfortunately, geese poop. E-coli gets into our water system. People get sick. People cannot swim in the lakes because the July sun has multiplied the goose poop's E-coli. It is a problem that can only be solved by ridding the number of Geese. I don't expect the land owners to stop mowing their lawns. I'm a realist.
