Yes, it can be FATAL to dogs. For real.

  3. not allergic per se, but it is a toxin to most dogs, some can saftly eat it but it's not worth the risk even in the slightest

There is a compound in chocolate similar to caffeine called theobromine. It is toxic to dogs. Also, chocolate does have alot of caffeine in it which is also very bad for dogs (and can kill them -- that'd why you should never feed coffee or tea to a dog either).

I think there's another thread that goes into more detail somewhere. Basically, chocolate contains:

    theobromine - attacks the brain
caffeinie - attacks metabolism / heart
    sugar - yadda yadda

A single candy bar won't kill a dog (yeah mine got into the pantry one day... that was one happy dog), but can't be good for them, either.

That depends on the dog. Some dogs can eat huge amounts of chocolate without getting harmed. My dog, when she was a puppy, got into my chocolate stash. She got sick, but it was relatively minor compared to what could have happened.

However, a single candy bar can be fatal to some dogs. My aunt's lab got deathly ill from one candy bar, he definitely would have died if they wouldn't have gotten him on life support fast.

That's the big similarity between dogs regarding candy bars and human allergies. Some humans can eat a whole can of peanuts without any effect, some can't even smell peanuts without getting a reaction.

    Totally ditto

So they might be fine, or maybe not, and could you honestly bring yourself to take such a risk?

I asked because my dog has had chocolate in the past and it hasn't done anything to her. But I'll make sure to keep it away from her from now on to make sure she doesn't get sick.

Onions are actually very dangerous...Well, raw ones. The cooked one are not good, but they aren't dangerous either. The raw ones can cause anemia very quickly. Onions are a natural blood-thinner and they have something else in them...I don't remember what it is. At the least they cause upset stomach, but it only takes a small amount of raw onions to kill a dog.

I think it's only fatal if their allergic, like it could be to a person. Other than that a large amount of it may make them sick. I would think it's probably the fat and milk in chocolate that would make them sick. My dog has to have a taste of whatever your eating and he gets chocolate quite often, never made him even slightly sick.
