    This is a fairly new hobby I picked up in the last few months.. I must say I really enjoy the idea of working with wood.. As it is a blank canvas there for you to design.. I currently am making walking (hiking) sticks and Canes.. I am wondering if any of you out there also do this.. I am looking for ideas and any information of personal experiences with woodcrafting of any sort. I also make Wooden Bowls and trays.. Always looking to expand my horizons!! :)

    Loving you,

    Daniel

    I might actually do that! I am about to finish a couple of walking sticks that are about 5 and 1/2 feet tall with a beautiful wood grain finish..

    I'm into walking sticks but I'm not too experienced...yet ;)
    My only problem is finding them in the woods around here...the ones I find aren't quite right in some way usually.
    So I read about this plant...called Walking Stick Kale/Cabbage or Tree Kale. It's basically a head of cabbage or kale that grows on top of a 5-7' stick,and the sticks can be harvested and made into walking sticks. This year,I am definitely growing them in my garden. I hope I can use those to make some cool walking sticks. You know anything about those plants? :)

    Be careful... dont do anything in a ski shack onto of a mountain.. My friend was getting into it and cut his finger very badly...

    i was thinking of making some walking sticks. i saw some rustic looking sticks at a festival with old bearded man faces carves at the top. they were simple and beautiful, i kept thinking of them as gandalf sticks. maybe i'll borrow my mom's handcarving tools and give it a try. thanks for the creative ideas! oh, anyone know what kind of wood would be best? i live on a farm with a large wood lot with a mix of oak, maple and birch.

    www.woodworking.com is a good site for all kinds of woodworking.

    The best safety advise I could give is "sharp tools."

    Great stuff. Have fun

    Thanks MikeE for that link as I always need more information and ideas and I can vouch for the "sharp tools is a must"

    Cre, I do not use a lathe but if I had one I bet I would use the heck out of it.. Right now I do nearly everything by hand.. the only automated device I use at the moment is a Sanding Mouse.. Saves my arm from hurting so much.. :)

    Hey Daniel;
    I haven't made a whole lot of walking sticks.The only ones that I have ever made,have been ones that were naturally shaped,and I just finish what mother nature had started.Would like to see some examples of your work.I make all types of wood work pieces,and hand made knives.I have some of them posted in my personal forum, Are You Creative?
