For some reason I don't like jambands. I have nothing against the music of Phish, Grateful Dead, etc. I just don't like it. I'm I the only one on this forum that isn't into jambands. The one that I can't stand is string cheese incident.
I don't like Phish, or The Greatful Dead, but I am really into some jambands. String cheese incident is not one I care for either...... as for widespread panic? Eh, I've heard better.
To quote Jerry Joseph "it's like they saw a Dead show in Palo Alto on a sunny day. They ate a mild dosage of mushrooms. Bob Weir sang all the songs. All was happy in the world." This is the message I get from SCI. They live in a fantasy world and their music reflects that. They have no soul. Their music is just a smorgasboarg of a bunch of other bands, especially The Grateful Dead. Nershi is a self proclaimed Necropheliac. Their jamming lacks direction. Around 2000 they started to stray away from the bluegrass/calypso sound into something that was very generic and distinctly Phishy. Kyle and Keith seem to want to take all the jams into boring techno grooves. Frankly, their music is boring and without energy. Their fanbase is by far my least favorite crowd on the highway. They're dirty, CONFIRMED. It seems like getting spun out is their number one priority. Cheeseheads all expect to get miracled into the show for some reason. I like rock shows and rock fans. Their fanbase is a bunch of hippies who live in their own fantasyland utopia. The music has no substance but the crowd doesn't seem to mind. Their songs always focus on the happy go lucky aspects of life. I need a darker element in my music. Life has good and bad and I prefer that the music I pay for reflects that. Like I said, SCI represents all that is wrong with jambands. _________________ Go Cubs umphrey's welcomes you to the dark side of the jamband world
I like good songwriting, therefore I'm not into jambands, I feel they are masturbatory and lack creativity.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh jambands most definatley do not lack creativety, those artists in good jambands are some of the most creative musicians around. I dont listen to SCI that much but i think tehy are really good from what i have heard. The crowd ad SCI shows i believe is awesome, while they might b dirty they are really friendly. The only big jamband that i have aproblem with is widespread, i dotn think they are that great and there crowd can be kinda rowdy. Some of my favorite jambands are phish, umphreys mcgee, ymsb, grateful dead (in the early 70s aka 72), early string cheese (99 is there best year imo) is good, robert randolph and the family band, and so many others. While jambands arnt the only type of music i listen too (Bob Dylan is my all time favorite musician) they represent a good portion of the music i listen to, cuz they ARE so creative and fun to listen to.
I like jambands... mainly because they're fun and interesting... they open doors for inspirational stuff, but my true inspirations for my playing are basically blues and folk, most of the time. I just like how they give you a lot of fun for the money.
I so miss the cheese of 98-99! I haven't enjoyed much in the trance groove they wandered into, and UMrules, where'd you get necrophiliac? LIBEL is an ugly word, my friend. I never was that taken with Phish. Just didn't speak to me, and that's OK. Saw some tech talent, but so? lots of bands are technically good. some of the smaller scenes are volcanically hot, and there are several flavors, Umphrey's, New Monsoon, Rail Road Earth, KanNal, Garaj Mahal, Steve Kimock, Drew Emmitt band, Sam Bush (newgrass). As my sweetie often says, there is life after Dead. No one says you have to like jambands. I'd hate someone to lecture me that I didn't give rap a fair shake (20 years of incidental listening is enough, thanks).
Nah, a lot of jam bands do suck, but I am a fan of jambands. You just have to find the right ones. If you want a good jam band try Soulive, they blow away a lot of the trash around right now.
I find that to be true about many jambands. Even ones that I'm not all that impressed with their songwriting, I still go to the shows as I like the energy. I can't say that about Assembly of Dust though. Reid Geneuar most certainly can write some fantastic songs.
I too am no fan of jam bands, and I also find lyrics to be the most important part of any decent song.
Lacks creativity. Have you ever heard of Jazz. they do the same thing ( for all intents and purposes) as a jam band. That makes absolutly no sense to a musician.
I don't even understand the genre "jamband" anymore anyway. there are so many bands now exploring the edges, I really like that. Labels don't mean anything. bonnaroo radio right now is playing allmans from 1970. Now that was/is a "jamband" too. but I'll never get tired of them. But I know what you all mean in this thread, overall.
that's a very close-minded way to look at it. if you had really taken a listen to some jambands, then you'd find that their is some damn good songwriting in there. Umphrey's McGee, moe., The Allman Brother's Band and Frank Zappa are all good examples of jamband artists who have damn good songwriting. and yes, even Phish cranks out a well written song once in a while.
but i mean the lyrics wernt very important in a lot of jamband's songs, i mean they use their instruments as means of communication. LIke you enjoy myself, probably my favorite phish song, its lyrics are non sensical and sparse, but the song is sick nasty. It speaks to me, they dont need words
