I got to college at minnesota state university moorhead and apparently once upon a time abbey came to speak here but refused to answer any of our 'farm boy hicks' questions unless he was paid ten thousand dollars....so not only did he want an outragous amount of money just to answer questions, he also judged everybody here as being a hick just because they went to school in minnesota

If I remember correctly, Hoffman died broke; he had a few hundred dollars to his name and some Acid in the refrigerator.
I also remember Jerry Rubin was working with a Wall Street brokerage firm when he died.

Different figures are constantly falling in and out of favor with the counterculture, but the reality is that all of these people are only human. Just because he, in your mind, sold out by demanding money to answer questions doesn't cancel out his contributions to the movement.

Not knowing the exact particulars to that situation I can't really comment. Is this all second hand word of mouth to you? Abbie Hoffman could be a rude and hugely sarcasic prick and the amount of money he demanded may have well been a poke at the capitalistic attitudes of the nation at the time with the attitude...if they are stupid enough to pay it. That amount of money or more is not unusual for speakers actually I'm still very glad I was involved in the Yippie movement before it died, and had gotten to see the man and I think he was alotta things, including a total dh at times, but I don't believe he was a poser.
