Kmart commercial with "let the sunshine in" Garnier Long and Strong is the same as that shampoo in the 60s-70s "for girls that never want to cut their hair" (my mom used it!) Hippy CLothes in popular scene (good or bad) Drugs more popular than have been in a long time
I don't know if this is an example or means anything at all, but A LOT of young people these days are listening to music from the '60s. Of course, that doesn't mean they are hippies... it just means they have good taste in music.
That would be so great if the hip culture could come back. I see signs but i can't interpretate them ...
You guys are nothing but mainstream wannabe hippie sheep. If garnier and kmart are putting out more "hippie" commercials and products , it is because they are trying to attract idiotic sheep like you... and look, it appears to be working! This isn't a new phenomenon either... Abbie Hoffman mentions banks taking the slogan "Do Your Own Thing: Bank at (bank name here)" in Woodstock Nation, I believe it is. Way back in 1970 Or maybe commercialization is what you want because then everybody would follow your way of life and thatd be ever so hip
It has never gone away for some of us heh so some crappy ads use some 60's cheese pop drugs have been popular since men stopped walking on all fours, this is a silly thread so I don't know why I'm replying to it but it made me giggle anyway hehehe
I don't think the culture is coming back but I do see a "hippie" trend coming round the mainstream. Old navy is selling tunics for $19.98 Just give it a couple months and it will be gone with the breeze.
That's what I'm waiting for! It's so annoying to have the price of things driven up just because it's "in"!:$
this has nothing to do with the hippie culture. i, for one, HATE that immediate link people put between hippies and drugs.
I find the whole "hippy" thing of today so artificial. Its sad but I say, let em' do it, its not hurting me any so it can't be that bad. I mean, its only image afterall!
Really. If young folks are happy definin' themselves via the 'hippy' image, far be it from me to try to stop them.
While I like these new fashion and culture trends better than the ones a few years ago, I doubt it's anything to get excited about. People have been marketing "hippy" stuff ever since the 60's. For example, in 2000-2001 I've seen many people wear bell bottoms. These are just trends. Just like last year the kids were playing Gangasta's and Ho's, they are playing hippies today. No big deal.
As far as commercials, the straight world has always co-opted hipdom and has always looked unhip doing it. I remember some hokey DJ's trying to sound hip by coining expressions from hipisms, like "far out and solid" or "that's kinda dynamite." Yeah, sure!
I think it's valid. Without drugs, there would have been no hippie culture. If hippie culture is characterized by a struggle to discover different ways of interacting with each other and living life outside of the social norms, then LSD was the catalyst. That doesn't mean that every hippie took drugs, and it doesn't mean that every person that would be considered a hippie today takes drugs, but drugs had a lot to do with the development of the whole hippie paradigm.
