I ment to post this yesterday. Anyway...

I am lactose intolerant, something I've recently developed. I am ok with not having milk and yogart and such, but the two things I'm missing are ICE CREAM and CHEESE!!! I miss cheese like you wouldn't believe! :(

Any suggestions, recommendations? Anyone try the soy cheese or anything I could use instead? Or something I could make? Would LOOOOOVE some suggestions here. I'm going through withdrawl!

Another question to those who are LI -- how do you deal with the gas and pain?

    Bright Blessings!

I am a little bit lactose intolerant. Something helpful to know is that not all products contain equal amount of lactose. Butter contains the least, as it is basically just 95 % milk fat, and water. yoghurt contains a lot less lactose then fresh milk, because the bacteria, that transforms milk into yoghurt digests a lot of the lactose. In cheses, it depends on the type: the harder it is, the less lactose it contains.
Depending on how bad your case is, you might be able to eat the one or the other thing. Something that might help you are lactase pills or drops. Lactase is the enzyme, that people suffering from lactose intolerance are missing/have too little. You eat them right before you eat milk products. But again, depending on your case, they don't help always.
But I have a friend who has a very severe case, but with the pills she can eat cheese. You just got to try what makes you feel comfortable.

As for soy cheese... it basically sort of tastes like tofu... so it really can't cope with the real thing. And I can really understand you with your withdrawel... I love cheese too. But maybe try the pills.

Then, for the gasses... there are the standart things: heat, warm tee, and some herbs, I just don't know their english names. But they just help releasing the symthoms a little, the cause it always there, as you are lactose intolerant.

I am too. I wish I could remember the name of the ice cream my grandma bought me when I visited her couple years ago. She knew I was lactose intolerant and it was made for that. I know it says it on the front of the ice cream box thing that it's for lactose intolerant. If I remember right instead of milk it's made from soy milk. It tasted like normal ice cream to me.

We get Swedish glace ice cream, it's good stuff.

My brother has a slight lactose intollerance and just has goats cheese, he's fine with mozzarela too.

theres excellent cheese substitutes at most health food stores. tofutti makes a really good sliced cheese one and a soy pizza that taste amazing. they should also have vegan butter there which is 100% dairy free and tastes very similar as well.

You can get tablets that contain lactease. You eat them with dairy foods, and they counteract you intolerance to lactose.

at least there are alternatives, like soymilk, hemp butter, etc. there are two types of 'soy cheese' and one is vegan, the other is not (i forget specific brand names, but the more common non-vegan fake cheese is sold in the produce section and has green packaging). the one that is not quite vegan tastes better than the vegan cheese.

fractual mentioned tofutti... they also make a fake ice cream. there are things like 'soy dream' ice cream and stuff, and also sherberts. if the flavors are too limited for you, keep some flavored syrups on hand (either like chocholate syrup from the squeeze-bottle, or actual extracts) or fruits, or nuts, or chocolate chips, etc... and then slightly soften the soy-cream, and "whip" the flavor swirls and chips throughout it. that way you won't have to miss out on your favorite flavors.

kasten gave excellent advice, so little more needs to be said, i guess. :)

i hope that your case of lactose intolerancy isn't severe! good luck finding easy-to-digest alternatives!

I just have a slight problem with lactose; I can handle cheese, ice cream, yogurt and skim milk, and even regular cow's milk as long as I have some 'padding' in my stomach (like milk on cereal is okay as long as I don't put too much on it), but if I drink a glass of cow's milk plain I will get a tummy ache! You might try goat's milk, and goat's cheese as well; they're fine with me... I drink *loads* of goat's milk with no problem.

I have been lactose intolerant since I was in diapers. Though I use to sneak some dairy (before going vegan) there are pills you take, which help most people with the digestion of dairy, which you could try.

As for dairy alternatives (which are much better for you and the earth)

you can get frozen soy yogurt (in number of flavours) hemp icecream, and ricecream (made with rice milk)

As for cheese, before going vegan (when I was vegetarian) I said i would never be able to do it. The soy cheeses are not the same (different texture) but are nice melted. Though some contain cassin (animal bi-product)

I have also seen lactose free cheeses, which I once tried, and you would more than likely not notice the difference. best of luck!

I thought that I was lactose intollerant. Then a lactose reduced milk became available. I bought it for a while and thngs were ok.Then for a while only the low fat version of the lactose reduced was available.I started getting bad hemmorhoids.I dumped the milk and the hemmorhoids went away. I then tried adding butter to food where ever possible.I now try to get full-cream, non homogenised bio-dynamic milk. This is ok.The supermarket does not always have it.Butter has gone up in price in the last year by about 25%The supermarket always seems to have skimmed milk for sale though.I wonder if there is a surplus of it.
