(A preface to try and prevent offence being taken:

I don't believe in astrology, but I'm sure I believe some things which you guys would laugh at, so don't think I'm judging or anything. I'm just interested in what people think.)

Do any of you beleive in the simplistic, star-sign based form of astrology that I'm familiar with? I mean as in "Oh, i'm an aries and he's a taurus. We're bound to get on". I'm aware that there's a *lot* more to astrology than this sort of stuff, but does anyone outside of tabloid newspapers think
    that star signs mean anything?

quite. and yet there seem to be dozens of people on here who talk about it as if it mattered - i can count at least a dozen threads full of people saying shit like "pisces are always X", "sagitarius are always Y" and so on. Would any of them like to explain? ;-)

I don't really believe in a lot of the astrology stuff. Occasionally something might be right but I just think that is coincidence. It seems that with like horoscopes- they generalize what they are saying so that any number of things could fit into that. And then people are like "Oh My they were talking right to me, they knew exactly what would happen to me."

Yeah, exactly. It's pretty easy to spot; just like psychics and so on. I wonder why people choose to 'beleive' it... Maybe it's an image thing, like beads'n'shit. Who knows... I remember when I was a lad, hippy-obsessed, I used to do the I Ching a lot, but that makes more sense, I think. You can see the I Ching as a book of wisdom, and the coin tossing is just an index into it that's unbiased by your own perceptions. Horoscopes are just stupid. ;-)

Your horoscope is never fully right because it's just your sun sign. Get a natal chart made and things will make a lot more sense... and then to have someone like you they have to be born at the exact same time in the exact same place.

What I don't get is that there are lots of folks on here who clearly believe in the star-sign bollocks, but aren't prepared to post in this thread and explain why... I suppose they know its bollocks, and just enjoy talking about it.. but why?

"Never explain yourself because your friends don't need you to, and your enemies won't believe you anyway."
I would not say there is something to it if I did not believe it. To you, jim_w, I suggest this. Find out your exact time of birth, to the minute, the location, and, of course, the day and year, and then give this information to an astrologer that is willing to do a chart report for you.
If that chart is not eerily representative of you, and you specifically, let me know.
I have had at least three different astrologers do this for me, and the results are accurate in an extremely specific way. Very little in them was not true about me.

fine, but that's not what i'm talking about. I'm on about the idiotic following of star signs that I see lots of people doing round here. "I'm saggitarius and he's leo. Should we go out?". I don't see anyone defending this, but lots practicing it; I can't imagine being involved in something to that extent, but not being willing to take 30seconds to try and explain it to an ignorant person.

I will admit that people only go by sun stars aren't really that observant. The entire chart is the necessary thing. Please don't judge all of us who believe in astrology on the majority of people like those. I'm sorry you have had to deal with that. Even though it's insanely rampant

The belief in astrology is just as arguable as any faith, such as religion or political standing. People believe what they find to be true. Personally, I myself find the planets themselves to be far more informative about what kind of potential I was imbued with upon entering into this life, and true astrology cannot be found in the T.V. guid or the supermarket tabloids, for it is a science much older than we are willing to recognize today. Societies from all over the world, the Egyptians, the Mayans, the chinese, among countless others felt a connection with the stars above, and noticed a pattern in the observable behaviors of individuals born at similar times of the year. They studied the planets and the changes that the Earth undertook when certain astral bodies exerted their influence more strongly, noticing again that their is a relationship between all things in the universe. The specific placing of the planets at the exact time of your birth doesn't bind you to a certain destiny, or demand that you develope into a predisposed personality, it simply provides insight into the potential that is yours by right of birth. Now, because I remember my past lives and I am open to the energy that emanates from all things, living or inanimate, I firmly believe that we choose the life we will live long before our infant lungs take their first breath. And by doing so we also choose that moment at which we take our first breath and begin this life on this plane. So many people plug along in their day to day lives, believing in nothing, having absolute faith in nothing, yet still managing to pick apart those individuals who choose to hold something as their truth. I believe that astrology is a science of the most precise nature, and because it deals with the relationship between things, the connections which can be felt if not seen, I have spent the last several years gaining as much informaion as I could on the subject. True, there are a lot of contradictory concepts, especially when you encounter people who exploit astrology to the extent of saying, "Scorpio's and Leo's don't go well together..." but I've found the base for even such grossly exaggerated observations to be far more sensible than those such as, "God took a rib from Adam and made Eve..." that are found in the bible, a book that many people are willing to base their whole lives upon. There is no wrong way to go about living, as long as you learn and grow from your experience, and I respect you a great deal for being willing to ask about something that you don't know much about. Being open to other people is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, and a closed mind is a handicap you can always overcome. Keep asking questions....the answers will come.

Very well said TW, we need to get past the mainstream feel astrology has. I would even go as far as to get rid of the twevle signs as they are, and just go by natal charts. until than, people will critize astrology and say it only has 12 viewpoints. horoscopes also need to be abolished IMO to get rid of the mainstream feel.

That's what I thought. So, why do so many fools follow star signs so avidly? Why has no-one told them? Or are they all fourteen?
