If you have never seen the columbia river gorge in oregon, its something spectacular... this is where I fell in love with hiking, this is what inspired me to be who I am today. I read the other day, in our local newspaper, that the gorge has acid rain as bad as LA! its bad enough to be killing frogs, and making it hard for fish eggs to hatch... I have grown up in oregon... I have learned to look at rain as something fresh clean beautiful... Today I was standing under a tree on a gorge hike, in the midst of a down pour... I looked over the beautiful trees, the amazing river, and the spectacular beauty of the gorge... I saw the rain. For a minute I was awed by it, but then I remembered the article... I cant believe that a place as prescios to me is effected by something like acid rain.. It makes me sick! The Gorge isnt even next to a major city, its just the wind carrying the chemicals.... Something needs to be done... Our forests need to have our fresh air and our fresh water... nothing about forest should say acid... ARG!!!! Im mad.... It should never have gotten this bad.
It could be coming all the way from China and Japan, with all their carbon emissions. This really sucks man. I remember when I was in New Jersey last summer, all the forests looked completely sickly, and it's because of all the industrial cities west of NJ in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, etc. Camping there, you could just feel the forest dying, it was kind of sad.
My brother lives near the Goge...in White Salmon, WA...I skimmed the article the other day--man that sucks.
