Why do I need this band to show that I care about ending poverty? Can't I just donate money to homeless people on the streets, or to an organization such as Free the Children?

These bands are cool...there's ones for breast cancer too (they're pink) and ones that say "cultivate peace" (they're blue)

Actually syntax, unless i'm mistaken, these bands are sold as a fundraiser for the causes they support.

I do see what you mean, as I do just generaly support a number of charities by donating money when and where I can, as do you if I understand correctly what you're saying. And of course it is not for me, or anyone, to tell you whom to donate to if that is something you chose to do. I simply want to suggest to people that this IS a worthy cause they might concider learning about and maybe donate to if they agree it needs it. Also just wanted to direct them to where they can find out more for themselves if they are not so well informed about this issue. And undoubtalbly to donate to them would indeed be perfectly enough to show you care. But this wrist band would help spread the word to others who might not have thought about it if it hadn't been for seeing you wear this white band. Maybe then when people see you wearing this white band they would also donate in order to get a white band. And so the 'ripples in the water spread across the lake' Maybe I phased it incorrectly, so you donating money is showing you care, think of the white band as "advertising" on behalf of this charity? I hope I have answered your question well enough for you. :H

Ok, well don't buy a band then if that is truely what you believe. But you can still donate to them can't you??

Ps. Oxfam, save the children and many other LIGITIMATE REGISTERED charities sell them. And I don't think it is 'hilarious' that in the time it's taken me to type this post 30 children in third world countries will have died as a direct result of extreme poverty. (That's a child every 3 seconds)

Even if some of my money goes to help poverty, it's still not as large a % as that of a regular donation. After all, I'm buying a product rather than just giving money away. Maybe it's just how I was raised, but I prefer to give secretly. I'll not be wearing something that's screaming "Look at me! I care about world issues! I even bought this band right here! Love me!"

Actually no, it's a great communication tool like Stasia already explained. It's like using a billboard, or a website to get a message across. It gets people talking. It's not about ego - or at least it shouldn't be.

    Hey,

Difficult topic...there is so much aid going on nowadays..
that we don't see the trees anymore in the forest..
I have travelled extenseley through India..found even my wife there..
the misery you see in a city like Calcutta..is unbelieveable..
but the warmth of the people I never found here in the West..
Whether you buy this arm band or not..that's your concern..
If the money goes to the right place..then it's worthed..:)
Money is a piece of paper only..but all of us are depending on it..
some of us are addicted to it..others don't have a nail to scratch
their ass..that's the cruelty of this world..
there is a lot of commercialism going on..some years ago in Belgium..
there was an action going on here for motorbikers..
we should all buy a white scarf..
and tie it around our left arm...so that other bikers..
could see we are standing with a defect bike on the road..
lots of people bought it...but it was only a short period..
What Stasia means is that children need the support they deserve..
    Stasia lost her child..we didn't..that's a difference..
Brave Sir Robin..not everything is commercialism...
travell to India..and see a child die in the streets before your eyes..
and probably you will look at this topic differently..

Well that is of course your choice my friend.
But please do not insult me by suggesting that I would wear one of these white bands to recieve self gratification!!!! How very pretentious of you!!! I don't think the death of millions of children in third world countries is really a very cool thing to jump on the back of to gain my own self worth inflated by praise!!! Do you know me at all to be able to accuse me of that??
I thought I had already explained why showing that you support this cause might act as a catalyst to get others to also think about, was I not clear enough? Super_grrl seems to get it!
(well done you by the way super_grrl, smart girl. Also thank you for fighting it's corner, this cause really needs it. I have to say I never in a million years expected this thread to become contriversial!!! I'm amazed it it has!! Horrifide a little, if I'm honest. Who would of thought giving money to a charity of such dessperate need like this one and spreading on the word would be veiwed by anyone as a bad think, huh?)

I've donated money to charity, and I've worn different kinds of advertising -tshirts, lapel pins, caps- but I think these plastic bands are SO ugly!! I guess the good part is they're really cheap, these other things I named were more expensive and thus less people wore them... but damn, they *look* cheap... and uncomfortable, I rarely wear stiff bracelets for any reason. No, these wrist band campaigns are not for me, sorry.

Quite apart from that I think there are too many of them; the first one or two made sense, but there are dozens now; white bands, orange bands, red bands, pink bands, afro bands, etc, etc... saw a website that offered over two dozen designs. I think that kinda does away with the effectiveness; when there were just one or two, people would remember what they were, would remember reading about it in the newspaper or seeing it on the news, or would be inclined to ask. If there are too many, people can't keep them all straight anymore, and they'll also be more likely to think 'oh, yet another charity' rather than be interested in details like they may've been when it was new.

    Stasia,

Stay calm..take it easy..don't let yourself get worked up..
in this world there is a word called opinion, belief etc..
If Syntax wrote something wrong...forget it..
put yourself above that..live for your OWN ideas..
anger is often the cause of much frustration in this world...
I see in your posting the real pacifist in you..the fighter for injustice..
in this world..whatever you can do..do it..it's often a needle..
in a haystack..but if YOU do something...you have done it..
and you will feel the inner satisfaction of it..not me or Syntax..
you are I should say a chick with balls on her body..
forgive me for the expression..one day I will get criticism also...
but I will stand for my rights..and it will be in a HIPPIE sense..
People who never say anything..can never say anything wrong..
People who never do anything..can never do anything wrong..
People who always criticise others...should first have a look..
    inside themselves..crazy world...crazy people...
and it all began with Adam and Eve..they said:)
put on the Moody blues...and dream away...
I've got that same feeling riding my motorbike...

You misundrestand me if you believe I am worked up or there is anger present here, that is not so but I WILL HAVE MY VOICE HEARD. If someone asks a question, I shall answer to the best abillity that I can. If someone debates with me about a point I make, I WILL debate back and DEFEND the point that I made. What is the point in making a point made if as soon as anyone questions it you say "Oh, alright then...." and not speak up for the belief you have? Debate is HEALTHY. There is no anger involved, just exercising my right to free speech. Shouldn't we all be grateful for the very fact we ARE able to speak so freely?

    Stasia,

    O.K..you have put that right...
I do understand what you mean..
    Words are often misunderstood...
I mean written words..I like to talk more..
is more direct..and easier to correct..

Ah, don't worry my friend. It is not always as easy to understand the emotional drive behind somebodies written word as it is with spoken word. I do understand that. ;)

    Stasia,

Yeah...it will take a lot..to get or make me angry..
it's not in my nature..but I'm very sensitiv to the
growing injustice in this world..rebellion is perhaps
the key word..but what can one do against such
powers like political games, corruption, wars for the
wrong cause??I think I feel a sense of weakness..
because we can't do anything to change this world
into a better place..freedom is also a word on page
    number???in a dictionary..if we want inner freedom..
I guess..we'll have to look inside ourselves..
and maybe here on this forum we can discuss it...
but does that mean we are all happy, free and full of love..
Hope somebody goes into this issue..because it's life..
If we want to change this world into a better place..
we often have to start within ourselves..

I just though some of you may be interested to know (as some of you thought that maybe the charity wrist bands might have lost their purpose since so many charities seem to have them these days, I did kind of worry that may be the case too if I'm honest, I just hoped it wasn't....) Well, I was wearing my white band for the "make poverty history" campain out today and I was delighted to find that no fewer than EIGHT people stopped me and asked either what was it or is it to do with the drop the debt charity they had heard about!! So proof,...enough for me at least,...that they DO do as they are designed to! People ask about them, talk about them, therefore turn the conversation to the charity in question and so (hopefully..) encorage people to either go and buy one themselves or donate to the charity in some other way!! So faith renewed that they clearly DO work. I believe so anyway.
