Hello, I've decided to check out the south island now and have sent off my CV to schools in Christchurch, Nelson, Queenstown, Dunedin and Timaru.

Which place would you personally recommend and/or have I missed somewhere off the list?

I'm into surf beaches, mountains, forests, alternative/underground/studenty lifestyle and a good sorta wage.

    Any recommendations?
    cheers peeps,
    :)

p.s. my next door neighbour made me watch one of your home grown films 'goodbye porkpie'...? It was EXCELLENT!!

    Dunners all the way!

It's got an olde worlde charme rapped up in a great student scene (it's just brimming with angst! Ooooh!).

yeah, dunners is great. And St Kilda and St Claire are surfable, (i think :) )

if you can't handle the cold though, maybe Nelson.

Queenstown is llovely, but very touristy and commercial...I get sick of it quickly, though it starts off good.

and Timaru...hmmmm....it's timaru...the toilet stop we had there on the way to Mt Cook was more than adequete to give me a lifetime supply of timaru

(an example - there was a playground outside the loo. Scatterd all over it were the ripped out pages of an erotic novel - shit like "Stanley stirred the swordfish, basting it luxourisly with the white sauce. As the steam rose sensously from the pot, Audrey gazed at this man, so rough at first meeting, but now, as he boiled the fish, so tender. She wanted him to ravage her then and there, among the potato salad, just as he had ravaged the swordfish" That says it all, really)

    woohoo, cheers guys.
I prefer cold weather to hot anyday.
Glad to hear Dunedin is a good place, i had my hunch 'cos of the University that's there.

p.s. Had a few replies but they've all said "call in at the office when your here". I could do with a job before i fly down there!!
( I'm on a tight budget, only enough money to pay for food and lodgings for a few weeks.)

    hell yeah.

another reason why dunedin is coooooooool - priceing. A news article I read today said that according to some huge big international? survey that rated 144 of the worlds most expensive cities, Dunedin was about 115 (i think).

the survey used New York as its marker - it rated other places by seeing what costs $100 dollars in NY and then seeing how much the same stuff costs elsewhere. For instance, you can spend US $100 in NY (on living costs, I think) or get the exact same stuff in Dunedin for US$61. quite a saving :)

thats sweet....prices herei n NY are INSANE..

for example, its 5 bucks american(7.5ish NZ dollars i believe) for a 12 pack of soda in new york....in vermont, its 6 bucks for a 24 pack....everything is like double here :(...oh well, last its not london or tokyo

the weak dollar dropped a lot of the US cities in rankings...damn thing needs to bounce back soon before i travel

tokyo is like insane though, may as well burn your money before ever hopping in a cab there.
