I didn't know where else to put this because I am a big, embarrassing failure, but the only way I can get dreads according to my mom is to use products to maintain ( I know Fleassy, that stuff is evil)...so case in point what is the best stuff in your guys opinion?
Well, I figured I'd answer here anyway, soo... I did my boyfriend's dreads with Knotty Boy stuff (www.knottyboy.com), because his mother had similar requirements. It seemed to work well, though I did have to use a different comb (I just went to Sally Beauty Supply and got a metal teasing comb for like $2). The wax smelled good, and I wouldn't know about the shampoo... I always use this oatmeal soap that I buy at the health food store for my dreads.
Dont use wax. It is evil. It will only slow down the dreading process and can make your dreads rott from the inside out years down the road!
I recommend no wax. I didn't have to use wax to do my head and it tightened up just right. You just need a metal comb, some good dread friendly shampoo, a bunch of tiny rubber bands and your patience. I even did my own head. No help from the folks around. I don't want to put a friend or stranger under that stress but it can be done. Friends do help majorly though. Heard knotty boy is pretty shitty compared to dreadheadhq. The dreadhead stuff is sold in any Hot Topic store for like 25 bucks if you want the whole works. Have fun with it.
I didn't like the Dread Head stuff... When I tried it out for poor unfortunate boyfriend, it didn't get very smooth between my fingers. It ended up kind of lumpy, no matter how much I squashed at it. And to the original poster... It's cool that you want dreads, and even cooler that your mom will compromise. However, if you know that wax is evil (boyfriend didn't before he agreed), can't you wait until like college or something and then get dreads that your parents can't rule over? I understand if you don't want to wait, but, yeah, just throwing that out there.
I sympathize for you folks still under the roof with parents and fam who hate dreads. Or degrade them. I have a mother who always was against them only because of the fear of what my father would do. I put them in my hair and my dad didn't say anything. He never had a problem with them as long as I could -wash- my hair. Then it got weirder in the extended family. My grandmother thought they were cute looking and the rest just went along with it with smiles and comments. It was a trip but I took them out because they feel restraining. Listen to yourself. The wait till college thing is a great idea also on the side because you don't have to put up with immature people judging you or the of age type of deal will be more grand with the thought of adding dreads.
tell your mom that if you put wax in them now they will mildew in a few months and she wont want to smell your hair =)
i just got dreads, and i didnt use wax mostly becuz i didnt have wax. But some people say you should and some people say you shouldnt. im ganna try the wax and see if i like it. But i have had my dreads for 6 days and they are doing alright. i havent washed them yet,im afraid they will come out. i dont really know if you should use it. but i am going to and i will tell you if its bad or not. about the waiting for college thing... i think you should just get them now. i did and im 15 and people love them at my school. even like this preppy cheerleader girl is in love w/ my hair haha dont worry what other people are going to think, do what you want to Peace<3
