Blah I got my urinalysis results back and they found strep b organisms in my pee, they didnt tell me that, i just read it in my blood work papers.they just told me I have a uti and bladder infection and gave me some meds.... Wondering if it is strep b (assuming ithis is something different than a uti or bladder infection) how dangerous it is and what kinda meds will they give me for it. I don't go back to the doctor till next THursday so I am sure they will discuss it with me then. Also I was wondering the causes for the strep, is it a bacteria, can it be prevented????

GBS is a bacteria that is found in the rectum. It cam migrate to the vagina and eventually to the urinary tract. 30-40% of women have an overgrowth of GBS in the vagina at any given time.
Normally, it doesn't cause a problem. It goes away when the immune system kicks in.
However, if you have it in your urethra and bladder, you have a large overgrowth. You will need antibiotics to take care of it.
GBS in the UT can cause miscarriage and preterm labour. An over growth of GBS in the vagina can weaken the membranes and cause pre-mature breaking of waters.
During birth, the baby is protected by the bag of waters. When the waters break the risk of exposure begins to increase every hour the baby is inside.
The risk of the baby contracting GBS is very small, but when the baby does contract it, the baby can get very sick, very quickly. Frequent vaginal exams after the waters break increase the risk.

Around 36 weeks, you will be tested for GBS again with a cotton swab in your vagina. If you come back positive, they will give you IV antibiotics during labour to protect the baby. Giving the antibiotics in labour decreases the already small risk significantly. If you are planning to birth in the hospital, I would recommend you get the antibiotics if you are GBS positive, because of the frequent vaginal exams.
Women who birth with a midwife may decide to accept antibiotics, or they may decide to limit vaginal exams, not have their waters broken by the midwife.
Remember to take your acidopholus supplements while taking anti biotics, or you'll end up with a lovely yeast infection!

How are you feeling? I had a few UTI's when I was pregnant with my oldest son. I had had a lot of experience with them when I was younger so I knew exactly what was going on. At the time I was pregnant with him, I was working at a family physician's office, and I would get my labwork or urinalysis done there and just fax it over to my OB, so I always knew the heads up before even he did. You should have seen me freak when they found traces of blood in my urine due to a nasty UTI though. I started flipping out. My OB ended up calling me at the doctor's office in which I worked at the time to calm me down because I was worried that I was miscarrying or something (I had had a miscarriage prior to) Well, he ended up prescribing lots of water and cranberry juice, and it did the trick. I didn't even need an antibiotic because I totally flushed that infection out of my system. :)

When I was pregnant with my twins, I lucked out and never once had a UTI, but with the amount of water I was drinking, it's no wonder. ;) Because I was at risk for preterm labor, and not having enough fluids could trigger contractions, I made sure that I was watered down at all times. *lol*

    Hope you're feeling better.

The site is good. I like Mothering. But real, pharmaceutical antibiotics are really neccesary for this problem. This is NOT something to home treat. The stakes are just too high.

Using natural rememdies along WITH the antibx would probably be fine, but please take the meds the doctor gave you. I disagree with Mothering's stance on the absolute "harmlessness" of Strep B.

Please, listen to Brighid, she knows what she speaks.

I love Mothering, and generally agree on most of what's said there. But a GBS UTI can be dangerous, and antibiotics are the best fix.

    I also agree with Brighid
I think that western medicine does have it's place in society.
I also think that herbs do too. I have read in my wise women herbal that drinking nettle tea during pregnancy will help strengthen the kidneys. also, stick with the whole cranberry thing, unsweetened and lots of water. you know your body best. but you also want to protect that little one inside. i think it will be ok. also i have heard that rough sex can be to blame for uti's so consider that as well. if you do a good clean up job before and after, you should notice results and if you get a little stinging sensation when you pee, cranberry is your best bet.
watch out for uva ursi, yarrow, juniper berries,horsetail/shavegrass, and buchu during pregnancy. i think the first two you can use at very little dosages but the others stay away from completely.
