I keep seeing this horrible pattern of comparing some other bands to Led Zeppelin. Can't you see that Zep is completely in it's own class and will always hold rule over every other band that comes along...well... forever? :) C'mon you guys!

They both have AMAZING music. It doesn't matter which band mate is sexier than the other...that doesn't make good music.

The Stones have been around longer, so I suppose that would make them more original in the sense of music style. Zepplin came along later...picking up some sound from older bands (I.E. The Stones)

    Nope!

Zeppelin took their sound from "The Yardbirds". Some of the members from Zeppelin were in "The Yardbirds" until they broke up.

They were going to call themselves "the new yardbirds" until Keith Moon proclaimed they'd crash and burn like a Led Zeppelin, hence the name.

Besides, most of their music is derived of experimental elements ala the sitar, flutes, violins, jamaican music (Dyermaker), and salsa (Fool in the Rain) just to name a few.

i love them both, stones have more great songs but zeppelin has that kind of music you can just pop the cd in and listen to all day while you lay in bed

I wouldn't say they took their sound from the Yardbirds... Their sound came from Jimmy Page's vision... When The Yardbirds disbanded Jimmy knew he wanted to 'keep on rocking' and he had a head full of ideas and directions he wanted to go in when he got a new band together..

They were infact called 'The New Yardbirds' initially too.. the rest of The Yardbirds signed over the bands name to Jimmy Page when they went their seperate ways and there were still some concert commitments to be completed in Scandinavia.. Even when they finially changed their name to Led Zeppelin they used to be billed as "Led Zeppelin featuring Jimmy Page!" and things like that... Until word got round, that is... The rest, they say, is history..

I wouldn't say their music derived from experimental music like the sitar or jamaican music either... I don't know where you've heard a sitar in a Zeppelin song and D'yer Mak'er was just like a one-off ditty.. lol
I think their music was built on foundations of blues, folk and rock and roll and roll, melded together to form their own unique sound..

I basically just said what you explained.

Either way they never borrowed their sound from the Stones. The Stones were a jazzy, funkadelic, southern rock and Zeppelin is just basically all over the board.

Of course its foundations of blues, folk, and rock all classic rock was. But they did experiment with a lot of musical influences it's obvious in their music. Dyermaker was Jamaican music, Fool in the Rain was salsa influenced, Battle of evermore was old world folk music with mandolins, Kashmir was more orchestra influenced, come on, all their music resonates with it.

I can see what you're saying... Maybe it's just they way you're putting it..

Sure they may have flirted with other musical styles but, at the end of the day, no matter how you try and coat it... Zeppelin were just a damn good rock and roll band, who made great innovations in their idiom.. Not just in terms of songs... but also miking techniques to get that sound and even to revolutionizing the way the music business worked when they ended up demanding 90% of the gate receipts... and got their way..

I was using it as an example. Saying they take their sound from OLDER bands. Not necessarily the Stones..

Stop following me everywhere contradicting me...it's really pitiful, man!

The Stones were all over the board too. Backstreet Girl is almost like some classic european pop song. They used Mellotrons, sitars, pianos, organs, african rythmns. Something i always felt the Stones had over Zep was soul. The Stones have soul that few bands have. Hell they even touched on country and disco.

Right on. At the end of the day you and I are Zeppelin fans, so that's all that matters.

    I'll ignore that comment because this is a good thread;

first, this is a board and we happen to cross paths every now and then,
second don't be vain I don't follow anyone around, I don't have that much time.
third if I contradict you it's because I disagree with you,
fourth I didn't mean that as a malicious comment, only as a regular comment for a good debate like I had with Jim.

But the difference was that Jim respected me and I respected him. There's no need for that type of anger and rudeness.

Let's not start anything up, I like this thread.

Considering the Stones started their careers by being England's version of Pat Boone. By being squeeky white boys doing neutered hatchjob versions of Black American R+B/Blues/Roots music and then being able to ride whatever fad music was in at the time until they attained whatever "legendary" status they currently enjoy.

Whereas Zeppelin started off purely as a way for Jimmy Page to indulge in the backlog of ideas he gathered while doing session work and with the Yardbirds.

    Gotta give it to Zeppelin.

No fucking contest. Stones were cheesy pop, fun to get high too, Zeppelin however are the mystical lords of rock music.

Sorry, Angel but I'm going to contradict you a little bit. Zeppelin did have soul. Robert Plant's voice is full of it; the raspiness, the high-pitched "baby's" in Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, his moany "ohh's" in D'yer M'aker. When Rob sang, he sang with his soul bared. Yes, the Stones have soul, but Zeppelin has a unique type of "soul" that's never been touched by any other bands including the Rolling Stones.

I thought you were going to ignore it....???
    I guess that is a difference...I don't respect you.

And there shall be nothing started...I won't come back to this thread.
