I am in school right now and I am depressed. The thing is the people only care about social advancement and not actually caring for a person when they are your friend. The teachers do nothing to corect this and if they do the kids laugh.Indiviuallity is not there at all...the hippie movement is turlly dead there as well.Im the only hippie in my area. How can we solve this how should I know....

I don't know what to do about the hippie movement but I agree with you. All people do care about is social advancement. How many people have friends who would intervene if something bad happened to their friend? I have trouble making friends.

Thats very true. Its a social heirarchy in many schools nowadays. Thankfully, though, there are alternative education movements, like Waldorf and Montessorri, where they reject that kind of structure.I go to Waldorf School now, and I'm much happier.

    Peace

I go to a Catholic school where all the counterculture/anime nerds/drama nerds/band geeks all kind of lump to form one clique. It's nice. I don't think there's any way for the staff to "make" the kids be there for more than social advancement though. Where do you live?

Actually, it's the complete opposite at my school. There may not be "hippies" persay, but at least 1/4 of the school (and a growing population) is more into counterculture and intellectual persuits then drinking or getting high all the time, which is awesome. It's probably because we have the IB school and all the IB kids are really artsy. We have a very big, accomplished thespian troup and all of the kids there are really nice, as well as the band geeks (I was once one of them), and the art kids. I'm part of the literary magazine crew too and we're all pretty cool, in my opinion too.

You have to go out and find people, and treat them the same way you want to be treated. If you're not open and friendly with everyone around you then don't expect them to treat you any differently. I'm friends with some of the the snobbiest, rudest, most godaweful "preppy" kids because they're really not all that bad once you get past the facade.

i dropped out of public school because of these problems. The major reason is school depressed me. I couldnt focus on school because it all seemed to be based on social levels. It seemed everyone thought it was about social life rather than a place to learn.
Anyways after that several kids dropped out to do homeschooling and it got to be more popular amongst individuals like me. Its worked out great. Im doing good in school going to take my GED this summer and mabye some classes. See the thing is i teach myself most of it all. If i need help i go online and ask teachers or other students. its all great. so when your parents say i just dont think i could do it you say but i can. AND it gets you ready for college where you need to learn by yourself.

"everybody's happy, everybody's free, we'll keep the big door open, and everyone'll come around" - typical situation, Dave Matthews Band

Dude, i understand all too well what your feeling right now, feeling all alone and even depressed. It took me along time to see that its all okay, dude don't worry about having friends that are hippies, just try to find people around that you find a common bond in and talk to people, if you shut yourself out you will never be able to find people that you need in your life. Middle School is a shitty couple of years, just try to make the best man, but know that your not alone there are others out there. Its impossible that everyone in your Middle School all are trying to advance socially, its a generlization and it just isnt true. Even if it is true take the time to find out who you are as a person and become an even deeper person take up an art form and express yourself that way. Worse come to worse, just laugh at them man. But Dude try to be open to others, and remain true to yourself, and its not the teachers place to make it easier for you, they can only make a positive environment inside of the classroom.

    Hope i have helped dude.

p.s. the "hippie movement" was only in the 60's and early 70's,
Now its just a collection of free spritis trying to escape a world of consumerism and buying in to the system.

School almost killed me. After over twelve years of being supressed, bullied, and being prisoner in that god-awful atmosphere I dropped out, and essentially became a recluse, which isn't a lot better, but now I'm working on building myself a new life (incidentally, learning more than I ever could have at school).

Boo fucking hoo, It's not hard to make friends. I go to a small school of about 300, everyone in the school is close as hell and we always look out for on another. Don't bitch about it on the web, get outside, go to a party, and make some friends!

schools def need to create a better environment... bigger schools especially have this problem... especially ones in larger cities... police walking in the hallways, drug dogs every day... this shit is rediculous... kids get arrested from school.. they turn school into a freaking jailcell its no wonder the drop rates are so high.

Wish I could be more than pessimistic about the education system in this country. School is for socialization. Education is something the wealthy and the self-organized recieved. If you don't pay for it or make it yourself all you will be provided with is the skills required to show up on time and do what you are told.
Don't worry about the hippie movement being dead. That's a good thing. If you choose your friends because they have dreads and tye-dye and listen to the Dead you run a good chance of ending up with a fried brain and a drug record. But I assume the people you long to connect for are people who share your values...

I agree with the title of the thread for sure. As far as not fitting in anywhere with anyone else there's a silver lining in that anyone who gets to know you does so as knowing who you are rather than some fabricated persona. If you're the only one, you can't be lumped in with a local stereotype. Represent! :) ha ha.
