Hey Gulf Islanders, which of the islands including Texada/Lasqueti/Hornby/Denman, are the most remote / lowest amount of people / peaceful? I've only been to Saltspring which is a beautiful place but I'd like to check out some of the more remote islands/places on Vancouver Island...any info is appreciated. Thanks!
I'm from Saltspring, its pretty trippy when I see my little corner of the world mentioned somewhere like this. Saltspring is getting to americanized to be really laid back anymore, to many old fat cats are retiring here and bringing their captitalistic way of life. Hornby is pretty much a giant camp ground in the summer, though I admit I've never been there. Lasqueti is supposed to be great, under 1000 people, maybe under 500 still, I'm not sure, it's north a bit, so i would need to take a big drive and then get a different ferry. I've heard many good rumors about Lasqueti though, something about using bud as currecy. Fact of fiction we may never know. Pender has people, Galiano has people, Saturna has people, Mayne has people but they are small towns, there is lots of the island left to explore. There are alot of little islands around here too, i can suggest trying a kayak trip and camping on wallace island or choclate island (not as exiciting as it sounds) or some of the other little ones. Most of the gulf islands are peaceful, Saltspring is by far the most populated with 14 000 people, (although in the summer it gets hectic with the tourists). If you really want peace, come here before or after the tourist season though. Good luck, I hope you can come and enjoy you visit here as much as I enjoy living here.
This is awesome, the first time I've heard about the gulf islands. I want to know if what you would do for a living there? Because I want out of the big city of Toronto, I want to live in peace by the water and this sounds like paradise to me. So If you have any more info let me know.
Yeah, there were rumors there for a while about Laqueti using bud as a currency but of course, once the mainstream papers picked up on it, the place was a hotspot for cops looking to make busts. For the most part, a lot of the communities are rather tight-knit... don't expect to be welcomed with open arms to a lot of these small communities until you've spent enough time there and have 'proven yourself'. Texada as well, is a definate hot spot for DEA and co-operating Canadian authorities, that kind of pressure can make communities become a little introverted to any outsiders. My g/f and i love camping and have been to a few of the islands that the smaller ferries run to. For the most part, the people we met along the way were pretty cool... like AOXOMOXOA said though, the summer/fall are peak tourist season and you get lots of upper class folks with big wallets and a different sense of life. While driving down a logging road on Van island, we came head to head with a mercedes, whose driver refused to back up 100m so we could get by (no kidding!)... me being as stubborn as i am, we just waited it out (made some tea) and after the guy screamed at us a few times, his wife finally convinced him to back up... "Have a great summer!", what an asshole. There are lots of great little artistic communties on the Sunshine coast as well. Kayak trips are definately the way to go.
shaba, good jobs around here aren't that plentiful, and we don't have any big chain stores that hire a bunch of people. Lots of restaurants and other tourist related stuff if you dig for it though. I'll admit, knowing people helps in little communities like this. I think earthfluff is painting us as a little colder than I'd like to think though, we are a somewhat warry of outsiders, but being Canadian is the key, proving yourself as an american is a little tougher. Sorry to all you nice folk down south, but I think the number of assholes in your nation outweighs the number of openminded and free thinking people. The key on the islands for a youngish person is to live with friends. Rent is high and jobs can be scarce. Excellent weed and mushrooms are always cheap though, so its not as much of a sink in your pocket as it might normally be.
Arrrgh. I really should make my way to Saltspring or Hornby. I've had the opportunities but unfortunately I'm lacking in spontanaity (sp?). I live on Vancouver Island... Ladysmith to be more exact. It's very pretty but it's really quite closed off from the rest of the world.
I was born on Texada and have lived on Saltspring. If you go to Taxada in the fall, people will not like you one bit, you weed theivin bastard you. SSI is beautiful and very welcoming to newcomers. There are too jobs there. Maybe not so much for 17 yr olds....If you show up in the spring or summer, you'll find work for sure. Hornbys really nice, all anyone there does is party. I've met some good people there. I hear Denmans nice. earthfluff...I think I know you......
Hello! I love the gulf islands. I'm going to Pender island for my honeymoon in the summer, and I'm looking forward to beachcombing, biking and relaxing. Everything is calmer there, it seems. Up there with Nelson as one of the nicest places to visit in BC. My guy grew up on Saturna. He loves telling the story about the corner store that had a tab for everyone on the island, so you'd go grab your stuff and pay it off at the end of the week. People there would have more then one job, too, for example the school principle was also the town plumber.
I llove Hornby. I lived there for a while when I was a baby. I'm totally gonna go there in my van this summer with my baby. It's seriously so magical. Another really sweet island to visit is Cortes. They have a really dope music festival there evry year. Super beautiful forest too. It's right off of Quadra. Maybe we'll see some of you guys on Hornby.
Hello IdentityCrisis I'm sorry, didn't mean not to answer you back there, I don't come to this forum very much! I grew up in Ottawa, lived in Vancouver for nine years, but now I'm back in Ottawa again. I miss BC!
hey, do you know of any good places to camp on hornby? do people still camp down the beach on little trib?
