I live in Utah...the morman capitol of the word[yes this is where the bugs attacked and the birds saved us]... Since I turned 13 Ive kinda wonderd, like all do at that age, who god was...where he came from...What is God...and In my wonderings I learned about every religion, from chritianity to the Raliens in california[go on...say it..."The Who?"] and in my mind and in my life I have addopted this point of view...that god is the accumiliation of many diffrent views. When we die we become one with every living creature. we become hope, dispair, anger, love, hapiness, tiumph, faliur...evry other form of expression and acchivment. If in your life you are a poet, dreamer, jock, whatever...your karma, soul, sprit, etc will help the next generation of poets, dreamers, jocks, and the like to realise there potental. So in essence I have DaVinchi, Poe, Michelangelo, all the artists of history infulencing my everyday life....and if I do not fullfill my life as an artist I am letting all them down as well as the next generation. This may sound wirerd but I dont know...maybe someone out here thinks like I do...if not...then just type what ever you think God is...blesed Be
Fundementaly i think thats a load of shit..but if these thoughts keep you inspired in whatever you do and your not dissapointed if your not as good as the people you mention..fine. believe whatever you like, Too me God is just a focus for people to take responsibility for everything that goes on in the world.. It is us as individuals that should take responsibility for what goes on in our world.. 'god' is a never ending question (people like that, keeps them occupied).. How would people cope if religeon was not the backbone of our world in some way..friggin poorly imho.. thats not a defence for thinking its a good thing .. I think the whole notion stinks.. We should grow some balls..give up the ghost and face the world as human beings 'created' from eveolution, and not that special at all. Be like other bloody animals on this lovely planet.
That's a really interesting concept and well worthy of consideration. I know plenty of musicians who feel this surge of "inspiration" when they play, as well as a transcendental feeling that goes with it. MHO is that god is the Divine Living Principle that permeates all of creation which connects with each individual along the gradients of their attention/belief/focus, and that kind of connects with your preception.
I have no motivation to try to create a definition of God that fits how I feel about things and what I know. Whatever I come up with will not satisfy those who have a different idea of God.I have already discovered too much to be able to fit my understanding of everything into the concept of God that seems to have some social support. The term "God" has no real meaning if no-one agrees what it means.I disagree with most of the concepts that those who say they believe are able to describe. In the end, what does it mean to say you believe in a god,but your idea of what God is is different than everyone else's?
....sorry for the long post, i've been thinking pretty intensly about this most basic and complicated question for the past week or so.... I think your right Matthew, but you take a very nihilistic stance on the whole thing. God, as we most often see it, is a concept consisting of some great guy in the sky who bears the responsibility for the way the world works. But, if you look at the origins of every major religion, you will see they were getting at something much deeper. The fact is that there is something at the root of all life that allows us to experience, to feel, to see touch and hear and smell and taste our environment. A computer can process information, but it does not feel the pain wehn it gets a virus. To me and many others, this pervading energy that gives us consciousness is god. Of course, whatever that is goes so far beyond verbal concepts that trying to describe it is actually a step away from actually understanding it. As people, we have the capablility to symbolize our experince in words - a usefull tool, but also one which gives us the illusion that we are seperate from this world - that somehow, there is a person or identity inside our bodies that we know as "john" or "bill". It is this knowledge of our own existence, and our own death that makes us different from the animals and eventually leads to us wondering what there is beyond ourselves. What we often forget is that we already are what we are searching for. Its not as if our thoughts and words have real substance - in truth what we are is a whole lot of atoms and energy working together, just like the rest of the world. Since (most) animals haven't developed these abilities, they can't wonder why they are here, or think about or stress out about things, because instead of thinking they are doing. When an animal is hungry, it doesnt worry about where its meal it - it stays in the moment, and searches for food until it finds some. The fear of death isn't a factor everything is here and now. Humans have transcended the purely instinctual/survival functions of the animals, but with this came other abilities which have created their own drawbacks. it is a wonderful thing that humans can use our conceptual, logical and verbal abilities as tools to better understand the world, create new realities and communicate on levels that were never possible. But when we forget they are just tools and think that our words, such as the bible, are the only ultimate reality, we lose touch with that free flowing energy life force that is the atomic structure, the DNA molecule, from which we undoubtedly sprang from and will undoubtedly return (ashes to ashes, dust to dust). basically, the word god has become a touchy word. To me, it is indescribable. WHen I feel the sensation of warmth from the sun, to me that is god because it just seems like a pure miracle that this ancient ball of burning helium that sets the rotation of the planet and is responsible for every waking morning of my life can beam down and that I can feel it against my skin - not just react to it. I could describe the sensation as "warm", but how do you describe the sensation of warm? you can't. words can only symbolize an experience, but not actually be one - except for the sound that word makes. the sound "warm" is not the same as the sensation of warmth, just as the sound "god" is the farthest thing from whatever that actually is. If it is so hard to describe the sensation of pleasure or pain, except in relation to another person's experience of the same thing, it is impossible to attempt to describe the whatever it is that allowed us to feel it in the first place. This is something that even scientists have yet to explain, yet it, without question, exists. As you said, matthew, the question of god keeps people occupied, and it also causes a lot of stress. but the reason for this seemingly redundant, pointless search is not because of the question, but the search for an answer. people are constantly looking for a period, an end or a final solution. In my opinion, the question itself is the answer. think about it. As hard as we try to describe or find god, the further we get from it - the only thing that remains eternal and that doesn't change about the whole notion is that we don't know what it is - and isn't this the essence of life??? tha fact that in this incredibly complicated world full of so many things to experience and to happen, that we can't and don't know what the meaning of it all is, to me is one of the most beautiful things. Once we can let go of the need to find the answer, and delight in the process itself, we can put our energies into creating the reason for our own life, we begin to take responsibility for our actions, the individual realizes that s/he in fact is god! letting go of the ghost of "god" is an important step, but equally important is letting go of the ghosts of the rest of life - the insecurities that hold us back, our attachment as people and society to money etc. etc. Once we drop our intense emotional attachments to our way of living and our idea of god and see that they are simply our own creations, we will no longer be afraid of ghosts, and in fact be able to enjoy them as they come along and let them go as they leave. The only thing in life that never changes is change itself, and resistance to new ways of living, thinking... is just another block, another eddy that the leaf of our own existence will get caught in on the river of life.
God just rocks who cares if he is made up or if thinking there is a God it makes you sleep easier at night. God is whatever you make of him. Fact or Fiction we were made from something and no one knows the truth. But just remember its your own belief don't let anyone pursuade you otherwise. God just rocks.
"It is this knowledge of our own existence, and our own death that makes us different from the animals" Other animals have some concept of what death is that's why they run away when you go near them, they have fear of death just like us. We aren't seperate from them in any way at all, we are animals. There are small differences between us and other animals just like there are differences between all animals, one of our differences between other animals is our arrogance. We are slightly more mentally equipped because we are slightly less physically equipped for survival. As for the whole god thing it is impossible to figure it out. Something created everything because we are here. When you ask what created the thing that created the universe is when you run into problems. It doesn't seem like there should be anything but there is. Maybe whatever is outside of our universe has the answer.
Mathew, thanks a lot for the response and your thoughts. I really think we are basically seeing the same thing just through different structures and word groups. Myself, I don't really love the word "god" either. i suppose its just that I try hard not to fear words, but you may be right that in some places the literal meaning gets taken out of context. In one sense, something like what I wrote could be meant more for someone who is already a strong believer in god in order to relate on their level. But anyway, i really appreciate the comments, talk to you later. - jesse oh yeah and god is definitely a turtle.
There is no such thing as God. It is a man-made concept. Put it this way. If we were all 3 sided, we would make our god a triangle, would'nt we.
You are a man made concept, in your head u flutuate around something that seems to be possible to exist as, so you do it. Once upon a time we didn't see our thing, we were just blended part of it even as people?.. only the concept of what it was to be a person DIDN'T MEAN FUCK ALL, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ONE NEEDING TO APPEAL TO .Y.O.U.R. 'PERSONALITY' TO SELL A SPECIFIC STYLE OF STILLETTO!!! er? god or no god, i see us. obsessing
Well the concept of god is we HAVE A NEED TO know how/who made us.We call him God.So we think that we need to find the religon that has passesd down his word form the days of the begining. Also we need hope that some one will save us form this screwed up world.
