Can you be a hippie and not dress in "hippie clothes"? I don't dress hippie at all, I just wear whatever is comfortable, even if it's kinda preppy.

I wear whatever I like, and I don't care if people don't identify me as a hippy. Who cares about stereotypes anyway. Let them think me to be whoever they want. I often wear all black, but at other times I wear shorts and bright shirts. Sometimes I wear heavy boots, and at other times sandals.

Most of my jeans are from Old Navy or Gap. Some people consider it preppy, but who cares. It's cheap and of decent quality. Would it be more "hip" to buy $100 designer bellbottoms?

Sure. Clothes are expensive. A lot of people I knew didn't go out and buy bells. Instead, they slit the seams of straight-leg jeans and sewed in triangles of psychedelic-pattern material (paisley, etc.) and put a band of it around the bottom to make them floor-length. I didn't even own a pair of bellbottoms until I started working in a menswear department and got an employee discount on top of getting early dibs on the clearance stuff.

hell no! lol jsut joking. I think the term neo hippie is suited to this idea of wear anything as opposed to the older hipsters who wer the typical hip outfit(which in itself is hard to define).
It's about your soul, really, but then again I do appreciate those kids my age who do dress like hippies, its refreshing and interesting to see. BUT you lose the surprise, when you meet someone, if you can tell their opinions from across a room its not as fun to meet them...

do whatever your little heart desired. i dont think you have to dress a certain way. i make some of my clothes, like tshirts and scarves and that kinda stuff. i think making your own clothes makes it totally more fun and personal, plus its original :)

Yeah, what DrSpaceman said. We used to make our own bells cuz it was so much fun coming up with weird materials to fill the gap with. Besides if you hippie you don't need no steeking clothes.

I think clothes are great for wearing your favorite color, whats the best comfort, what makes you look friendly and approachable and freakin laidback. Clothes I wear are very cliche in a stoner wardrobe but I don't smoke dope. When I did smoke dope I dressed another way and people were suprised when I said I smoked pot. But now I don't smoke dope or have any desire to and dress like a stoner and people are suprised I say I don't. So becareful if you care what people percieve of you but I think that if you don't look mean and uptight whatever you wear is fine!

I myself am guilty of having judged people for the way they act by what they wear. But I'm more apt to judging on personality then anything. If you have a shitty personality I don't care how you dress. :) You are an avoidance. So all your actions speak louder then words and physical things. We all let off some sort of vibe.

    Totally agree with We_All_Shine_On

Clothes don't make a man, or hippy.

i think cloths arnt what make you a hippie..but i think that if your a hippie who says you hate the corporations and what not and then you go out and buy american eagle cloths that thats hippicritical..i personally try not to buy cloths from places like american eagle, abercrombie a fitch, walmart etc..not because there unhippy but because young children and women are making these cloths in sweatshops under horrible conditions...im huge into human rights so thats a big reason why i buy union made cloths , cloths from small little shops..or i make my cloths...thats the only reason i think when you dress preppy its unhippy..because were those cloths are made support opression...but thats the only reason..also if your against mainstream society its hippicritical to go out and buy all the lastest fashions etc...i dont want to sound like you need to dress like a hippy to be one....peace

that's important who you are, nevermind about your look. if you're hippy inside, you don't need to dress in a particular way. if you want to do it, don't forget to have fun!

I agree! Most people my age don't care in the least about any of the hippy mentality, and yet they buy $500 tunics and sandles and parade around. I don't normally dress like a hippy...but I will admit, sometimes I try....and yeah, I agree with deadheadforpea(ce?) that most of the clothes made at high end re-tail stores are made in sweatshops and underpaid women and childern...I also try to avoid clothes that commodify womens bodies or make ugly statements when I wear them.....but hey, how you act will speak way louder than what you wear!
