some of their songs magically appeared on my gf's computer, and neither of us know how they got there...weird...haven't listened to them yet, though.

I like their first few albums, especially their 1967 debut, Safe as Milk. I'd say that they're an acquired taste, though.

I prefer to listen to zappa. capt beefheart is at the level of zappa and the mothers, but I think zappa is a bit more listenable.

From my point of view Captain Beefheart records are the sort which you like to own but not really listen to frequently.

Like most said, they're a very aquired taste.

'Safe As Milk' is one of my favourite albums of the 60s. I haven't heard much of his other stuff. But 'Trout Mask Replica' is not easy to listen too

They are a terrific band, Captain Beefheart is a genius. They're a marmite band, you either love them or hate them. Even if you love them they aren't played too frequently. Trout Mask Replica, Ice Cream For Crow, The Spotlight Kid are very good albums. I think that Trout Mask Replica is John Peel's and Matt Groening's favourite album. One of them absolutley hated first time he heard it, then it grew on it him an awful lot! Beefheart is a magnificent artist too!

I cans see you like Zappa, so you might of heard some Captain Beefheart without knowing. Well his singing at least. He sings and probably plays on Willie the Pimp, Pothead and Muffin Ma to name a few. He's definetley worth checking out, Safe As Milk and Electricity are good 'introduction' albums. Like someone mentioned, some of his stuff is far from easy on the ear, but its like nothing you've heard before. By the way, legend has it Captain Beefheart wrote Trout Mask Replica in 8 hours :H

.... that's odd, i found Trout Mask Replica to be a great album the first time I listened to it. It's still my favorite album by Beefheart.

I like(d) it so much, that I had to find more Beefheart, and was somewhat disappointed in everything else I found...

    Safe as Milk
    Strictly Personal
    Lick My Decals Off, Baby
    Clear Spot
    Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
    Doc at the Radar Station
    Ice Cream for Crow

Out of those, I have to say that the only ones that come close to the awesomeness of Trout Mask Replica are Lick My Decals and Ice Cream. His first two are alrite albums, but I find them to be such a letdown when compared to Trout.

I like Lick My Decals Off Baby, an older album, but then again I also liked Doc At The Radar Station, one of the Captain's later ones. They're accessible, but odd enough to be really interesting. If you like that, then maybe you can handle the total unreality of Trout Mask Replica......
