Are they a good or bad thing? Do they upset you, or do you laugh at them? And have you heard any funny gay jokes you can share with us ?
If they are jokes portraying gays negatively then I would not want to hear them. Most people think negatively about gays even though 20% of the U.S. is gay.
I make gay jokes and laugh at others I make black jokes and laugh at others I make white jokes and laugh at others EVERYTHING has the capability of being hilarious.
There's a time and place for certain humor: Discriminatory jokes should only be made in small circles of people that know each other very well and understand that it's just that: a joke, not a held belief that a certain people are lesser. In public, it's never appropriate.
I think gay jokes are amusing... such as, "Why can't a lesbian wear makeup and go on a diet at the same time? Because it's hard to eat Jenny Craig when Mary Kay is already on your face."
I sorta agree with Abyle, it depends where it's coming from. I'm not gay, but any joke about something I do/am/like; if it's a friend and I know it's just a joke, sure it can be real funny, but if it's coming from someone whom I know to be real biased, it's no fun. I disagree they can't ever be made in public; even in newspapers, there are columnists who are known to make 'just jokes' and columnists who're known to be truly biased and the first category doesn't bother me... Usually you can tell from the context, from the rest of the column (or from the rest of the conference if it's a standup comedian) which is the case, even if you didn't know them. With individuals in bars or in school or whatever, it's just the same... often you can tell from the tone of voice or whatever whether they're serious or not. I'm rarely if ever personally insulted; I just don't care what people say about me and often, on a personal level, I think bullies are so pathetic they're funny. But on a larger scale harmful jokes made with harmful intend can hurt; they can reach those people who believe the things said thus swaying public opinion in a negative way, and they can also reach people who're not as thick-skinned as I am. Still I don't think that jokes clearly told as jokes are bad; being too uptight about people poking a bit of good-natured fun can also sway public opinion in a bad way! Then you are seen as uptight, or hypocrites ('they critisize others but can't even take a joke' or something)...
Gay jokes are funny when I make them. Also, more gay people should use the word gay as a derogatory term. It's the only way forward, kids.
If you think about it, you shouldnt get offended. If it is intended to offend you then you just have o relise that people are only trying to do it because they fear or dont understand it. Other than that, just about any aspect of human nature is created into a satire... you just gotta relax and reflect on everything!
That's a good point Baby Fire-fly..I used to be offended by gay jokes, but then I wondered if they don't serve the important purpose of evacuating the discomfort people feel about the subject. In other words, if they can't address the topic seriously (and be accused of being gay, or trying to preach) then the only thing left is humor. Of course I'm not naive enough to think that all gay jokes are positive, possibly very few are, but in some radical way can't gay humor be considered an affront to homophobia and its code of silence? cause if someone makes a gay joke, they have to publicly allude to and acknowlege that reality -as oppose to pretend it doesn't exist- and therefore that person admits their own interest or questioning over the subject. Ok, maybe that's pushing it a bit lol..but really, there aren't many alternatives in society right now to discuss homosexuality. But I don't caution the bullies who relentlessly try to degrade and break others' spirit to compensate for their own insecurities. That's not joking, it's abuse.
Good question... ill have to think of some..... well there are plenty i know but they are very long... The main ones are wife on husband jokes such as... "Öne day a husband was talking to his neighbour, and his neighbour said to him 'look mate you seriously need to get curtains for your bedroom... i could see you and your wife making love last night' and to this he replied 'Haha yeh right! I wasnt even home last night....'"
Patrick Fitzgerald and Gerald Fitzpatrick. Almost all sexist and racist jokes are not funny to me. Like this one, which is sexist. Why don't men get madcow disease? Cuz they're pigs.
Why do women marry is white? To match the other kitchen appliances. Why do women have such small feet? To get closer to the sink.
if everyone started saying you cant make gay jokes that's singleing out gay people as different. if a person makes a joke about gay people in the same way they make a joke about everyone else, surley it means they accept that gay people are the same as everyone else. that doesnt bother me atall. peace and love stardust xxx
The problem is that 99.9999999% of all gay jokes (or at least the ones I've heard) really aren't funny...just vicious and mindless and stupid. We've got children stooping so low as to use "gay" as a catch-all negative word. We've got people who should know much better not calling them on it. Obviously, something we're doing is not working.
These = funny, the one about pigs was shit. Straight jokes: generally just making grunting noises and talking about tits and lager suffices. That or "Coupling".
