My friend and her husband had a beautiful baby girl a couple of months ago. It is their first child. She is nursing. Well, yesterday she woke up and her right breast really hurt...it got worse to the point of her crying. I went to the doctor with her today and guess what he said...

"It's all in your mind. You are just stressed. You regret having a baby and you're mad at your husband for spending time away from you."

That is completely and utter crap! First of all, my friend and her husband planned this baby. Second of all, the doctor made it sound like my friend's husband left her, but all he did was go to China for two weeks on a volunteer mission-he left on Monday-with her blessing!

Anyways, I touched her breast (yes, ok, she's my friend) and it feels as hard as a rock. Also, her daughter can't get any milk from that side. My friend is running a temp and I am watching her baby because my friend feels so sick. I am worried. :(

I thought doctors were supposed to care about people.

Did she go to the emergency room? I think she should your own doctors will lie to you if they don't know what to say or don't know what they're talking to you and don't think it's serious. But if she goes to emergency room they will already know that she thinks it is serious and even if they don't agree they will test to make sure. Good luck to her that really doesn't sound good.

isn't there something like ( I don't know the word in english) that there is milk in the breast but because there is something jammed, it can't get out, so it starts an inflamation. The symthomsyou mentioned sound pretty much like an inflamation - high temperature, hard tissue, pain.. but a doc should know this. A fever is always worth an alert. Maybe there is some psychic stuff involved, but right now it has to be treated physically. Maybe you should chose another doc. Or go to the ER

Hope your friend feels better soon!

yes, that's a blocked milk duct-mastitis-if it has not gotten infected, a warm compress prior to feeding should help. if she has a fever, or the skin is red, it's gotten infected, and she'll need antibiotics. please don't let it go!
what an idiot that doctor sounds. perhaps he's one of the 'all babies should be bottle fed' school--i didn't think there were any of those left, but there's always one fool i guess.
hope your friend gets help. maybe consult a midwife? she could need some counseling on positioning in nursing etc to ensure it doesn't happen again as well.

Yeah, it sounds like a clogged duct. Take her to the ER and she needs to find a new doctor! What the fuck?!?

yeah it sounds like her milk duct is clogged and she needs to put a warm compress on it or take a warm shower to help release the milk that is clogged in there.

i also want to say that the dr should be slapped for saying such a stupid thing. it is not all in her head. i have been there before and it hurts like hell.

can she go to another doc, or maybe the ER? it sounds like mastitis. symptoms are a rock hard breast and flu like symtoms, fever, aches, chills. she might need a course of antibiotics to get through it. i can't believe her doc said that to her. what a complete idiot!!!!!

Your friend desperately needs to see another doctor. Logical thing to do in this situation. I believe he may have just been a little too personal and biased...

Putting cabbage leaves in the freezer then putting them in her bra will also help her feel better! But she should also see a doctor quickly!!!!!

My dad is a male OBGYN....not all of them suck, he is such a great doctor and does everything for his patients. He's saved a lot of lives and been through a lot of shit.

I wish I had seen this sooner. This poor womyn. This is an instance where a good malpractice suit would be a good idea. She could have gotten septic shock or a abcess.

I am glad she saw someone else. She NEEDS to keep nursing, never see that asshole again, and see a lawyer.

IMO, womyn doctors know NO MORE about lactation than male doctors. In fact, womyn doctors who choose not to breast feed (or even chose not to have kids) because they were "too busy" are probaby the WORST doctor you could have when you have a new baby.

The worst part is that she is actually thinking of switching her baby to a bottle because she's afraid it will happen again! Is this sort of thing common?

Breast infections are common, but usually due to waiting too long to nurse, or using bottles "part time." The breast NEEDS to be drained very frequently. The best thing for her to do, for both her and her baby's health is to keep nursing, and NOT use any supplements or bottles (unless she has to work, then she should pump at least every 3-4 hours and NEVER give a bottle once she is home, ONLY nurse when she is not at work.)

i don't agree - the woman who was my obgyn for my first two boys was not bad, but my last doc was a man and AWESOME.

sorry your friend had such a bad experience, i can't believe that there's still doctors out there that would even say such a thing - when she was obviously having a medical problem, how could he say it was all in her head? fevers are indicative of infections - not neurosis :p
