What do you all think of the Jeff macdonald murder case. Basically he was a green beret who lived at Fort Bragg, and in 1970, coming off of the disturbing Manson case, his wife and kids are murdered in their home on the base. Jeff was the only one that survived from his family. He claimed he was sleeping on the couch when he was awakened by 3 people, “drug crazed hippies”, one of them a female chanting, “acid is groovy kill the pigs”. Macdonald was convicted and is serving time in prison. As a person who identifies as a hippie when I first heard about the case, I just assumed that Macdonald was indeed the killer, he was the killer, and then blamed it on a group of people who were taking major heat at that time, because of manson. Now after reading more about the case, it seems scary enough, that macdonald may in fact be innocent. He has barry sheck a famed lawyer, who is demanding DNA be tested. It seems that if macdonald were guilty he wouldn’t ask for the DNA to be tested because it would be obvious to him that he was the killer and the evidence would only point to him. Also, he is demanding a new trial, again, if he was guilty, why go through the trouble of a trial if the evidence is so heavy against you? I now believe him to be innocent. I have read considerable amounts of books and seen many films about the 60’s and hippies. Although I would much rather be back then, than in the 2000’s, I do think it was far from paradise. I remember reading about runaways in height eating cats and dogs to survive, or hearing a reporters account that when MLK was assassinated he asked a hippie for an opinion, and he basically said he could care less and refered to MLK in racial epithets. I also know that during the 60’s, the things that went on during the 60’s have to be looked at from the point of view of the war. You had all these kids who were in a state of fear and their friends were being carted off to die in nam. That’s why the weathermen, symbionese liberation, manson and others came about. They were all reacting to the death and destruction that was happening. People basically just went nuts. I am not saying this is good or right. So my assertion is that Macdonald’s family was killed by hippies who were angry about macdonalds hardline stance against drugs and methodone.
