At my school, there is an environmental club, consisting of roughly 20 people. (theres 450 in our school).

There have always been recycling bins at our school, but only a few. Because of this, many people were too lazy to find those recycling bins, and threw out their recyclables. Well...

Our club took old boxes from the printer room, and put bags in them, and put them next to every trashcan in the entire school! Now, poeple are recycling a lot more, and the members of the club take shifts taking the recyclables out twice a week, because it isn't the janitor's jobs to do it. Some people still are lazy, and our club actualyl looks through trashcans, and "patrolls" the trashcans at lunch to make sure that recyclables are recycled.

The results are stellar- (YES, stellar is such a cool word!)- we have pretty much gotten people to be aware of recycling and the effects it can have.

We are also planning on writing the script for an assembly, where we will visit the middle and elementary schools and present information, and play games with the kids to get them into recycling, and get them aware as well. Hopefully, this will get them in the habit of recycling, so that they follow through the rest of their lives.

If you are reading this, and attend a school, try and start an environmental club and do the recycling thing- it's really working here!

    Cheers
    Dylan

my school has an enviromental club but it sucks ass, our teacher rep. says nothing is ok, and wont let us expand our recyling. we so far we have just put boxes in the caf. what are other suggestions of things are school could do. our club only has about 10 member in a school of 2, 000 which is sick. we need ideas, because i graduate this year, and every member will be gone

Do you have any reccomendations on how to start one...or get people to join. We have an Earth Club apparently, but they didn't have it this year becuase of lack of interest...I go to a very wealthy school where the enviornment is at the bottom of their list of worries...any suggestions?

i dont know i have the same kind of problem.. no one really seems to care, except me and a select group of friends.. its is kinda sad. but if you could get some friends togther, mybe do some recycling awareness.. put up signs in your school, incourage recycling on locker clean out.. that kind of thing. Our group is oraganizing earth week celebrations and we would also like to hold a veggie BBQ. It seemed to go pretty well last year, so we are trying to put it togther even better this year, with more food to capture peoples attention.

I am lucky that my school is small- only 450 people- so it is easier to make a point with less people.

Speaking with teachers directly is something that has worked for us- it really impresses them to see kids being passionate about the environment. We have boxes all around the school, and we take shifts twice a week taking the recyclables out to the recycling bins in the back of the school. Sacrifices like that need to be made in order for programs like this to have an effect- like staying after school to do the recyclables. Also, our school has the announcements spoken over the tv's in each classroom, and before the "news" starts, they have a little introductory video, or commercial that students make. We have made ones for hte environmental club, promoting recycling. We also inform people, when we see them throwing out a recyclable, that they can recycle that. It has to become part of your daily routine.

We are also organizing an assembly- we are going to the middle school and elementary school and informing them of recycling. And for earth week we are planning some events as well. It is all about informing people in as many ways possible, without pissing them off. If you are going to correct someone about recycling, or encourage it throughout the day, make sure you have facts to back yourself up, so that you dont just sound like you are whining.

Just try and inform as many as you can, talk to teachers about "Recruiting" more people to join the club or maybe a science teacher or any teacher will perhaps sponsor your group, and help you guys organize. Get all the help you can, ask friends about it, ask people you see about it, see if people want to join it- ask everybody. Its about reaching out and doing all that you can.

    Good luck!
    Cheers, and Love

our school has some recycling bins but no one cares and shoves all their garbage in them. thats about the extent of our school caring.

Recycling was faddish for awhile around here. Lot's of stickers, bins, etc.. but then it dissapeared like a fad as well. Nowadays, one faces a whole host of insults simply for bringing it up. You see, it's because it's trying to destroy the American way. "Who are you to tell me to buy recycled or not use so many disposables. I'm an American, I can do what I want, and you're not going to take that away from me." (btw, that's not me, it's me paraphrasing someone else)

i help run a recycling program at my school. its going pretty well. weve always had recycling bins in every classroom but now were getting kids to recycle their plastic bottles and milk cartons at lunch. a while back some other students and i "investigated" and found out the school takes the recycling bins out after school and dumps the paper in the regular dumpster. we had a meeting with the principal and that doesnt happen anymore

That is a very boss story (HA! Boss is just as cool as steller...lol). I'm glad that it worked out so well for you. The school that I went to didn't care about the enviroment at all. Grrr...makes me an angry boy.
