i heard this album playing in a store once. it was bluegrass, but it sounded like phish....perplexed, i asked the clerk about it and he said it was the Gone Phishin bluegrass tribute to phish. i dono how many of you know about this gem, but its truely fucking awesome. lyrics left absent, a number of classic phish songs were converted to bluegrass and performed by some excellent musicians. i actually prefer it to the phish versions check it out
it you like the grateful dead, check out the "pickin on the grateful dead" albums. They are pretty much the same thing except with the dead
yea i've heard a lil of gone phishin it sounded alright but i only heard one or two songs off it. I always did wish phish did a lil more bluegrassey stuff...
Mike was a big proponent of bluegrass within the band, but he was overruled much of the time by Trey and Jon's instinct to push boundaries
I should listen again to gone phishin. I have it somewhere. Some of the Dead bluegrass versions are really good. I have some of that too. I remember feeling confused over the phish bluegrass. Some of their songs convert really well to it, some don't. guess I should dig it out and listen. thanks for reminding.
mike actually plays the banjer fairly well, we presented him with a gibson grenada up in Ny, i believe it was the same weekend they sang the anthem at the nets game. Jeff Mosier a close friend of mine was a huge influence on the band as far as bluegrass goes!
Trey on the other hand really never glued to the bluegrass idea, which is cool man, its not for everyone, heck i listen to all kinds of music and my band we only play blugrass less than half the time. I saw Trey pick a 30s pre war D 28 and he acted like it was any old guitar. Yall check out that phriendly book and read up on old Jeff Mosier, yall ever hear tell of a band called Blueground Undergrass?
