I seem to remember hearing long term salad munchers tell me that they got sick when they fell off the wagon and munched on there fellow critters. does that realy happen, and is it bad ?
Absolutely, I have always had a low tolerance for meat, but I forced myself to eat meat for many, many years, and it is very tough at holidays because my family is very controlling and wants everyone to eat what they cooked, but the last time I tried to eat meat, I couldn't stomach it at all, I was extremely nauseous, and just the thought of meat would make me sick, even seeing animals on T.V. or cattle farms on the way back to school made me sick.
sometimes the very smell of meat is enough to make me nautious. i'd imagine that eating it would make me pretty sick. i've known people who've eaten meat again after being veggi for a LONG time and who said that they were fine, but then i've heard of people who've been wicked ill afterwards. i guess it just depends on the person.
It is totally possible to get sick when you smell meat. It happend to me a couple of times. The funny thing is when I am in an apartment building and someone is cooking meat I can smell it.
i ate meat on and off when i was a kid, then became veggie when i was 11. just before i turned 20 i started eating meat again, started off with tuna and chicken and only after a while could i eat red meat. i was fine, with red meat it was more psychological i think, although the first time i ate bacon (in pieces called lardons - in pasta) i ate a bit of fat or gristle or something and it was disgusting, thats not something you get with veggies! i am now thinking about becoming veggie again, or possibly vegan. i can't really give any reasons, it just instintively feels like the right way for me to eat.
I get sick when I smell it...actually that's part of why I became a vegetarian...I was getting sick from the smell, from seeing raw meat...and then my mom asked me to put raw sausages on a cookie sheet...and I just couldn't and I almost threw up...and that was pretty much the end of that...lol...a day later I was a vegetarian and have been ever since...

I don't think it would be as bad, just because you'd still be getting the protein from fish, and i think it's the surge of protein from eating meat after a giant abstinence from it that makes people ill. i think people getting sick from the smell of it is mostly in the mind - the thought of a body cooking...
I wouldn't think protein had anything to do with it. As a veg, you should be getting your protein by other means anyway, and if you were going that long without it, you'd be screwed up anyway. I've grown an intolerance for meat. I was veg for a year or so and then the guys at taco bell screwed up and slipped me some mincemeat and I had about a spoonful 'fore i realized what it was. I ralphed like a mutha that night.
mmm, i was just thinking because there's SO MUCH protein in meat and it'd be a bit of a shock to get protein in that kind of amount after just getting it from elsewhere. that's just what i'd assume though... on top of that, the thought of what it is you've just eaten can't help! yea my last post wasn't quite worded the way i was thinking it heh...
I really want to start making the transition to going vegitarian. Its real hard though with what my parents cook. Tofu, my sister said it tastes nasty, but I like dry oats, and plain rice. So maybe I will like it? What stores sell things like veggie burgers and veggie foods? I cant eat lettuce, tomatoes or onions, I will puke. But I can eat any kind of fruit, and beans, and stuff like wheat, and rices and all those legumes or wahtever they are called, Would it be really hard for me to eliminate meat?
depends on how bad you want to give it up...whether you just dont want meat in your body or you think it's wrong to eat animals will affect your decision if you decide to do it...it might be a bit difficult at first...but theres loads of alternatives that you can buy from any supermarkets...online recipes etc and im sure the veggies on here will help you out too! ooo ooo and lentils are really very nice eat loads of lentils they are mmmm mmmmm gooooood
re: ill from meat I have a theory, thoery only, that since meat is SO concenrated it "shocks" the stsyem, kind of like gorging on ice cream or rich desserts. re:going veg- will you eat other green leafy things aside from lettuce (which gives me the mental pic of iceberg lettuce) marinated tofu is better, try dusting thin slices in arrowroot powder and frying it to begin. Make a yummy sauce of some sort. I use peanut butter, garam masala, veggie broth or water and TONS of red pepper flakes. serve with brown rice and sauteed/stir fry veggies.
That sounds good... One of the best cookbooks I bought was A Year In The Vegetarian Kitchen...your comment on marinated tofu made me think of it because I made a maranade from that book with red curry paste and ginger...that's a great book and its organized by seasons so you always have cool and yummy food to make all year long!
i think it might have something to do with what your body gets acclimated to eating over time. There are lots of incidences envolving feral children( kids who lived in the wild with animals and no human interaction) who were used to eating their meat raw, and when they were brought back to civilization and served cooked meat, it made them very sick. so even though they ate meat, their bodies were used to eating raw meat for so long that when they had it cooked, that was a totally new thing for them and their bodies didnt know how to handle it.so i think if you dont eat meat for a long time, or ever, its a new thing for your body to process when you finally do have it... but of course it can hafto do with the mental aspect of it too like everyone else says.
Yes, your body will often adjusts to your eating habits. My mom isn't a vegetarian but she doesn't eat much meat either; maybe once or twice a week or so. And over time, she can manage less and less of it. If she cooks herself a small steak she'll only be able to eat half of it... She does like that small bit of meat, she doesn't want or try to be a vegetarian, but her meat tolerance has definitely gone down since she's started eating it less.
