At Confest I caught up with a vegan who is even more extreme in his views on margarine than I am.He told me that making or selling margarine should become illegal for health reasons. I suppose he is right.
I asked if being a vegan and eating organic are ideals that are odds with eachother. He has no problems with animal inputs for organic food production.
That I call bring sincere :)
He also told me that I should have come on his vegan bus tour.Sounds entertaining. :D

That is about right. To make blood & Bone you take a bits of deal animal or even a whole dead animal and bake it in an oven until it dries out. It then goes through a grinder where it becomes the coarse powder that we are all familiar with.

So you're talking about things like gelatin? WHY DOES HE CALL HIMSELF VEGAN IF HE EATS GELATIN?!?

Gelatine and blood&bone are two completly different things.Gelatine is consumed by humans; blood &bone replenishes nuitrients to the soil that are lost to the growing of hungry plants.

I don't like margarine. I don't like butter either. I was born like that, apparently. I am a freak.

OK, you're talking about using bone meal and other rendered animal products as fertilizer for organic farm production.

I totally disagree. Being a vegan for reasons of conscience would preclude using animals products for fertilizer.

Being a vegan for reasons of health is selfish.

I always thought it is up to the individual where they draw the line on what constitutes being vegan. For instace are you going to refuse to drive a car because the tyres are made with geletine? What I liked about this vegan is his lack of hypocrisy.I am fasinated to know how to grow organic vegies without animal inputs. I have read that you can use human urine diluted 4:1. However the underpining philosophy of organic / biodynamic / permaculture is to work with nature instead of against it, so in a way it doesn't make much sence.
I once met another vegan who openly didn't like organic growing because of the animal inputs involved. His suggestions for feeding the soil were far worse than synthetic fertilizers.I showed his "fact sheet" to a biodynamic grower and he like me found the idea of putting potassium chloride on the soil to be quite disgusting. If I had a hang up about using animal inputs for growing then I would use a pelleted slow release synthetic fertilizer.

My (small) garden has done well with manures. I have friends with animals an dI gather the outputs, so to speak, and use it.
I've not needed to cross the bone bridge because egg shells are part of the "outputs" I gather, but I think that meat for pets is fine, so the byproducts of such for a garden would be acceptable, but not perfect.
I disagree with vegan for health is selfish, simply becase its a means to an end. if 3 million vegans are so because they want to look good, isn't that a lot of indirect benefit to critters? I think so... but opinions are like %^%holes-- everyone's got one and they all stink.
