If only mainstream radio and TV could find more space for art and great music as exemplified by "Close To The Edge" with a little less emphasis on fashion-based pop. It's just a daydream of course given the current state of the music industry! If only the modern music industry would encourage a higher degree of musical creativity, we might then have a chance of seeing a new generation of bands approaching their music with the same kind of adventurous spirit as Yes and the mid-late period Beatles.
Sounds as though the "Wonderous Stories" of YES are set to continue. In a recent interview Jon Anderson said that YES is taking "a well earned break" in 2005 but will tour again in 2006. In the meantime, dates for a combined American tour by three members of YES (Chris Squire with The Syn/Steve Howe solo/Alan White with his band White) are likely to be announced soon.
I see that no one's really talked about the Ultimate Hippie Band part of this thread. And I can assure you all, that statement could possibly be true. If you listen to their early albums with Banks, Kaye, and Bruford, they had a sound very different from every other band in that day, but as those 3 members left the band, the sound progressed more and more deeper into the annals of what we now call progressive rock. If you want to apply hippie to Yes, listen to Fragile, Close To the Edge, and Tales From Topographic Oceans (that album being the most guilty, because, it's based on Eastern Religions and Mythology), and you'll get your answer. In my opinion, they were the most talented hippies of their time. They were all vegetarians, I think, except for Rick Wakeman and maybe Bill Bruford and/or Alan White (they didn't look like the type).
Lately I have really been getting into "Magnification." It didn't get much recognition, partly because of its release date of 9/11/01, but I believe it may be the best thing they've done since "Going For The One" and is certainly, in my mind at least, one of the first great albums of the century.
Soon, oh soon the light . . . After all your soul will still surrender. After all don't doubt your part, Be ready to be loved. Oh man, that is good stuff!!!
guiding lights, we touch them, our bodies balance out the waves, as we exonnorate our days to the look in your eyes!~
RELAYER, where you been man?? Yeah, that album's my fave. But my favorite song is "Awaken" off GFTO. That pipe organ solo is utter madness.
