Roger McGuinn invented a new 7 string. It replaces the 12 string as far as versatility goes by doubling the G string. Martin made it the Martin HD-7. It's a non-limited Roger McGuinn special signature edition (like the clapton models). http://www.martinguitar.com
Wrong. The seven string guitar is actually a traditional Russian instrument. Here's an article I wrote about it on Wikipedia: The classical and acoustic seven string guitars originated in 19th century Russia. Its invention is attributed to Andreas Sichra who also wrote the method for the guitar and seventy-five compositions. It has been then proclaimed to be a Russian guitar and has been primarily played in Russia and later the Soviet Union. While it did not replace the regular six string guitar in Russia, many of the more "patriotic" musicians such as Simeon Aksenov and Yuri Vizbor chose to play it as it is a part of Russian herritage. The Russian version of the seven string guitar has been used by professionals due to its great flexibility, but has also been popular with amateurs due to the relative simplicity of some basic chords. In the standard tuning, the A major chord is simply a barre on the second fret, the B major is a barre on the fourth, C major on the fifth, D major on the seventh etc.
Thank you guys for the heads up. Me and Jason were blabbing about this. He couldn't put a finger on the inventer. I kinda figured Steve Vai did but that Russian thing sounds like a link too. We'll discuss. Appreciated.
This one has seven strings too, a Saz or Bağlama which is a turkish instrument. With a Saz you can play 1/8 tones, not only 1/2 tones like in western music.
