Assuming you want "instant" gratification, and not go the natural route...what you do is you section off your hair into as many dreads as you think you'll want. Then grab one of the sections and with it, take a comb and backcomb it...as in, kinda like teasing it and combing it backwards, but make it as tight and knotty as you can. Then you can rubberband it at the end to make sure it doesn't come undone (but don't leave the bands in forever 'cause your dreads will suck 'em up and it'll be a bitch to get 'em out). That's basically it. Do that for your whole head, and don't use any wax...'cause the wax will make the dreads not knot up properly and could cause mildew and stuff. If that's not easy enough to understand, I'm sure someone here can post a link to something that tells you how to do it better.

Oh, and one more thing...you'll most likely need a friend to help you out. I had someone do the back of my head for me 'cause otherwise, if you try to do it yourself, they'll probably come out all uneven and stuff. So yeah, get a friend who's cool to help you.

Well doing the back of your head all uneven is lovely... he-he. I say just let your hair grow and live its life.. it will dread over time... but it sounds like you want to back comb them..

So yup …Artist of peace has it down.

Just grab your self random sections of hair. Then backcomb with a metal flea comb.. (backcomb: holding the hair out. and coming the front to the back… creating knots up the shaft of the hair till the tip is full and dreaded) that why it shrinks... plus it will shrink allot when your hair tightens up.. I suggest not to use elastics, if u get the dreads natty enough all you have to do is leave it…. for ever and never touch it again..

Think about it this way, your hair will dread if u leave it alone.. so if u backcombed it and leave it alone.. its already a few steps ahead steps ahead.. so don’t worry.... just love the mess at the beginning

When backcombing, hold the end of the section with one hand, with the other take the comb and start about an inch away from the roots and comb back towards the root while slowly rollin the end between fingers. This allows hair to slip out and knot better. Work your way down the hair about an inch at a time! I would not use wax has it actually inhibits the knotting process! Rubberbands are a waste of time also! I would also wear a nylon stocking on my head the first couple of weeks while I slept and in the shower while washing em, this helps em get alil more established, before they start to pull apart and reform. Just remeber everyone's hair is different and while react different to different methods.

    Jah Bless & Happy Dreading

Sounds easy until you go to do it. It takes hours and hours of work and still looks like shit and you can't get the back on your own and your idiot bf is no help. I took it out the next day. I am going to have to pay someone to do it if i really want it. :$

I know how you feel but its not an overnight process. dreads are a life time commitment, and when u backcomb... at first it does not look good, its not supposed to either. just let it be and your hair will knott up... please dont go paying anyone to do your dreads..

oh and I did the back of my head by my self.. worked out fine :)
You could get a friend to help you,
    good luck ;)
