Alanis Morissette, for singing about life and love and ups and downs in a to-the-point, self-reflecting, almost educating and yet entertaining manner. It's pop / rock / singer songwriter or something, I'm not good at genres outside metal really. Aaron Stainthorpe from My Dying Bride, for writing about love, death, faith (or lack thereof), hope (or lack thereof) and misery, all in slightly mystical ornate way, that really keep stuck in your mind. My Dying Bride plays atmospheric (death-)doom metal. Dani from Cradle of Filth for writing about dark fantasies, or in other words sex, sex and... sex, all in a mystical, elaborate, baroque way, and quite tongue-in-cheekoesn't get boring at all. Nergal from Behemoth (since about 1999 - before that it were all standard crappy black metal lyrics) and Krzysztof Azarewicz whom he writes the lyrics together with for writing not-quite-standard-for-death-metal lyrics about self-realisation and achieving strength through ancient rituals and whatnot, together with Vader (both bands are from from Poland) a few of the only Death Metal bands with a positive message.
Noel-fuckin-Gallagher! By far the greatest songwriter of the 90's. Syd Barrett - he was just amazing... I don't think there's ever been a more creative lyricist. George Harrison - definitely the most talented songwriter of The Beatles. Bob Dylan - I don't think he needs explanation Pre-70's Dylan anyway.... Brad Smith - he was the main songwriter for Blind Melon, not Shannon.. I'd put Lou Reed, but I recently read that Morrison and Cale did a lot more of the writing than they are credited for, but gave the songs to Reed to keep peace..
I'm not sure who exactly wrote the lyrics to most of Led Zeppelin's songs, but whoever it is, they are my fave. Their songs are just captivating, and are so fantasy like.
Their earlier stuff included covers like "You Shook Me" and "I Can't Quit You, Baby," both by Willie Dixon, and they arranged some other traditional ones and included parts of other songs (like "The Hunter") in some of their own (like "How Many More Times"), just as you'd expect from a blues-based band. In their own compositions, they all lent a hand, and even though Robert Plant wasn't credited on their first album, his vocal (and harp) improvisations made it what it was. Although their fourth album is probably best know for "Stairway to Heaven," a feature I especially liked was the guest appearance of (the late) Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention, another excellent band, sharing vocals with Plant in "The Ballad of Evermore."
Joni Mitchell...She needs no explanation. Just listen to Blue or Mingus and it's just slapping you in the face how awesome she is... Also, Frank Zappa of the Mothers of Invention. All of his exteme lack of seriousness really gave way to something much deeper if you looked close enough...and it's just really appealing to silly, complicated minds.
i dont feel like explaining them...but these are my favorites: -Bob Dylan -Devendra Banhart -Elliott Smith -Nick Drake -John Lennon
Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, 2pac, Krs-one, maybe eminem's old stuff because he was just so good at puting words together, really it was skill, I like a bit of courtney love too, john lennon and paul mccartney. Thats all for now I htink most of them have been said anyways.
Spider John Koerner! Just Listen to his renditions of "Lady Day" and "Duncan & Brady" with all the ad libs.
Mines gotta be Dylan, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie and Black Francis. Also, Mike Skinner out of the Streets!
I totally agree with her. George Harrison's solo stuff is great. It's great how in brainwashed he go's from rock to like spiritual. Bob Dylan is like reading a great book and listening to a good song at the same time. he's also very unique and nobody can write the way he does.
