PROM?.....Are you kidding. Hippies don't shine their nails, get a hairdo and go to prom. Unless you want to listen to drab music for the masses by Brittany and B-boys.
Here's what hippies can do at proms:
Hand out anti-war literature in front, kind of what the last post said.
Perform some incredibly drastic stunt like streaking or releasing 100 goats, then have a good 10 second anti-Bush speach for the cameras.

I actually agree with the guy. It's not a rule or anything, because hippies have no rules, but it makes no sense. If you're a real hippy, you should not even -want- to go to prom. Or at least, you could go but wear cool homemade clothing, hemp peace chains and pink sunglasses. But it still doesn't seem to make sense to me, since you'll be supporting a disgusting capitalist event, be around people in pretty clothes, listen to terrible music... It'd be going against everything you believe in. And what for? To see some people for the last time? Well, if those people are worth seeing, you'll see them after highschool.

As for the people "doing whatever they want" argument, sure, it's a very important aspect of hippy culture, but there are things a real hippy just wouldn't do. For example, would you drive an SUV just because you feel like it? Would you volunteer for the Iraq war? Would you buy stocks of companies that are destroying the enviorment? But what if you feel like it?

the last time i checked it wasnt about pink sunglasses and hemp jewelry. sure its part of it but i think its more a state of mind. i see what your saying but i think your definitely generalizing with your last post

Indeed, it is about a state of mind. And who, with that state of mind, will pay $100 to just rent a suit or dress, rent a limo, pay to get the hair done just right so that society accepts you, and then go to a party to fit in with the crowd? The particular clothing articles I described were only examples. In fact, I never wear any "hippy" clothing save for my mended pants. The idea is that if you -do- go to that party, your purpose should be not to fit in, but to show your opposition to this tradition.

LoL I'm a senior and I keep getting the question so are you going to prom??? The truth is I would so go if they didn't play such crappy music. At all my dances they play rap, and spanish reggage. If I tried to put in some disco, or classic rock I would get "Turn that white shit off." So I decided to throw my own prom at my house and invite my friends.

I didn't go to mine, but The Fugs have a song on their "Tenderness Junction" album that relates to the subject. :)

Ok so I think I've decided not to go, but I still want to do something fun that night. There's this junior guy I like, maybe if I get the nerve I'll ask him to smoke or something that night....
