Okay man, here's the big deal. Salvia Divinorum is consider like an '' an extraordinary herb used in shamanism, divination, healing, meditation, and the exploration of consciousness. ''

Okay I'm totally fine with this. I started to do some research on the forum and some good websites about this plant that look totally amazing by the way. The thing is everyone seems to consome it in the ''extract'' way wich I'm not totally okay with.

I mean I don't think that it's really being natural to mix 5 leafs in 1 (5x). I mean if Nature wanted that leaf to be 5 times more powerful; well... it would be, but it's not the case.

So I've been told that MAYBE I couldn't expect a vision trip from 2 small plain leaf (if they are small) or 1/2 for the big one.

So when science did not existed to extract Salvi... How people get a trip from plain leaf? Okay the quid thing. But what about the smoking? They didn't have gravity bong or cooled water system bong too. It was only a good ol' pipe.

You might not agree with me but I don't think it's respecting the great plant that the Salvia Divinorum is to extract stuff and make it something more ... hmm ... you know again don't respect the nature and put the little humain touch in it with the science.

But again I might be wrong because I don't know a lot from the Salvia Divinorum and maybe I should just consider smoking 5 leafs rather 1 (5x). Anyways...

our knowledge of the native civilization in mexico is very spotty.
pipiltzintzintli - pilpiltzintzintli - sounds like salvia
documents suggest that they did smoke it.
there is no reason to believe that they did not potentiate it (use extracts)
there was a lot of sophistication in their cooking etc.
(c'mon chocolate, coffee, cocaine, they really had a lot happenning)

Quids often gave powerful trips when used, without needing extracts (in fact, using extracts in quids is very uncommon). And, a water-cooled smoking device isn't NECESSARY, I've tripped from just a standard pipe myself. I recommend you use a water-cooled device for 2 reasons, (1) it will not burn or be anywhere near as harsh, and (2) as a result of #1, you will be able to take larger hits and hold more of the smoke in.

Barbuchon, there is a technique out there which is affectionately called "boosting." If you want a REALLY powerful trip, and only have plain leaves, you can do this:

Make a big quid, chew on it for about 30 minutes, until the effects start coming on very strong. Then, take out a pipe, and smoke the leaves.

The result will give you the effects of a quid and smoking plain leaves combined on top of eachother, which can easily get you a powerful experience.

In addition ... the Mazatec Indians are well known for their Salvia DRINKS. This is effectively, the native's extract. Leaves were soaked in water and drained (possibly pulpified beforehand using a mortar or some such device), and then the water, which was thick and somewhat bitter, was drank.

Beyond even this, the most common Mazatec method of ingestion was just eating the raw leaves; chewing on each leaf for a few minutes, and then swallowing. It gives the "quid" effect, but the experience would last longer on a more subtle level (kind of like if you extended the "come down" time of the quid experience to last another 2 or 3 hours, for a grand total of, about 4 or 5 hours).

However, I do NOT recommend doing the drink method! I don't have enough data on it to give you the proper instructions for performing it, for one. For two, what I have been able to find out suggested that the drink, which could be made up of even hundreds of leaves (salvinorin-A doesn't permeate the stomach well), would last an average of EIGHT HOURS. That is a LONG time! Unless you want to be tripping (or at least out of reality) for a third of a day, then I don't recommend it to you! Usually, making drinks were only reserved for large harvests of Salvia leaves, for uncommon rituals where a mass of Mazatecs were gathered under the supervision of several experienced shaman sitters, for a very long, powerful journey into the Salvia realm.

So just as a recap ... the Mazatecs ate the leaves, chewed the leaves, smoked the leaves, and made a drink/tea from the leaves, which was based on the principal of an extract.

The scientific version simply takes the salvinorin-A out of the water, and sticks it back onto the leaf.

However ... I wonder if the extract experience might be different if the salvinorin-B was also put back onto the leaf, since salvinorin-B is supposed to be slightly psychoactive.

Hope that answers it for you. =)

A quid is what we call when you take 10 to 15 leaves of Salvia (preferrably fresh), and roll them all up into a ball. You chew on them for 15 to 30 minutes, as you desire.
