Does anyone else think that our great grandparents, etc had the right view on life. This to do with materialism and possesions. If they had clothes on their back, food in their stomach and a roof over their head they were happy. Anything else was a bonus. Isn't this the way to live? Any ideas?
My great grand parents sat around at home suffering from "hysteria" drinking too much laudnum and writing about how ill they were to their freinds in the country... ok maybe just my great grand mother... still... One should never generalise about a generation of people, in all generations there are all kinds of people, and most of them follow the fashions of the time.
Most people who were happy with that were only 'happy' with that because they knew they couldn't get much more; the richer folks were just as materialistic as most people are today, if not more so.
Wow!!! your lucky! I don't touch money jsut cause Im a starving artist. And I gave it away. Yeah, GOD's not a capitalist, life is free. Or atleast was free. But what do you think happend? Like why are children so stressed and complicated today?
Well, life is much more complicated today... My grandfather graduated from the 9th grade, and that was higher education! School was seen as unnecessary... The only education that you required was how to run the farm. These days college graduates are having a hard time finding minimum wage jobs, let alone something worthy of their investment... If there was more viable dirt, we could go back to the family farm, raising crops to feed your kids and a little extra to trade for a new ox when you need one. But, unfortunately, we really don't have much anymore.
My grandmother spend a good part of her time shopping at Fields and buying things. My grandfather (dad's side) had TB and Diabetes, and died of cancer in his 50s. My other grandmother died of cancer when my mother was a girl, and her husband (my other grandpa) was a useless alcoholic. No, I don't think they had all that great of lives. (OK, I'd like to be able to afford to buy everything at Fields, but that is about it.)
I guess as long a strife exists it will exist. Unless we choose to just let it all slide and enjoy ourselves.
My great grandparents were money crazed land rulers. However, I do believe that in their hearts they only tried to live the way we do now. With the purpose to find and do good. Now the definition of "good"...thats what starts all the trouble ;o)
Absolutley cause I would say that good is just that felling of grateful happiness. Which Is not to be confused with pleasure.
yup. I figure there's only two amounts in the world. there's enough, and there's nothing. If you have enough you have everything. If you don't have enough, you have nothing. Some people have alot but they never have enough.
hay nay kid ape good point but i would say if you have enugh you have every thing if you dont you still can if you choose my gr parents on my dads side came here or should i say my grt grnd parents on my dads side came stowed away on a steamer his son fought in both world wars worked his ass off to bring all the family he could to this country were they had to drop part of their surname so they would not be lynched after the war built two stores that helped bring a community together by the time i was born he was bedridden but he would get up for christmas just for his grand kids scrach ore face whith his wirey wiskers and go back to bed he was a great! man and i will never forget him!
Yeah I like to call that the groove. When you move with the groove, your in the groove of things ya know. BUt, flmkpr has a point too my paps is from Africa and even at age 60 he still wakes at 6am and sleeps at 2am, he is a doctor. but hes still happy. I think you gotta be in this groove so intensely to be able to do that. ya know, super disciplined
Sounds like in your great grandad's case hope, courage, and a chance to do something with them were enough.
Yeah we lack alot of discipline today too. We jsut care about materieal and arbitrary sh!+ more than just being satisfied, and making music or what we bring to the world
I don't think anyone has the right to judge the way another is living. "Sometimes there is no way to live but your own"....name that quote.
