Phish's music is amazing, although I don't like all of it... it's just crazy. I liked that Phish could fill a huge outdoor venue, music sounds sick at like a collisseum or like the tweeter center in MA (used to be greatwoods), and the vibe is different than a small intimate venue. But, when they get that big, the scene could get shitty like with the frat drunkards and whatnot.... the drugdealers, hippies, freaks, conservatives, whatever don't bother me... just cops and assholes (sometimes synonymous) definately ruin the vibe. Oh, and drugdealers ripping people off too.

Hey, I am new to the forums.

I was wondering where Trey's ego is shown? I have watched Specimens of Beauty (Very small documentary, on Undermind and if you have on demand) and he was really enthusiastic about getting everyones personality into the songs. He seemed really happy and The band seem to really jive together. Of course I have just been a fan for 2 years, so if any interviews/articles/websites showing his ego would be appreciated.

I am more drawn to the Phish barn then I am to phish. lol.Does anyone know who got that when they broke up?I am guessing trey does...

Well, you really have to compare their older stuff from the 80s and early to mid nineties to see the differences.

Ok, this comment is directed at the person who said they don't like Trey's personality offstage...Have you met him? Chances are...you haven't. I have. Honestly, before I met him, I thought he would be an asshole too. But, honestly, he is a very nice individual and I had an incredible conversation with him for about 45 minutes. Now, I will say he wasn't as nice and easy to talk to as Page, but Trey was a little easier to talk to than Gordo, who I've met an hung with several times.

And as far as Trey being a god...eh...

He is definity a very profound guitarist; probably one of the most talented (not the most, but definitly up there) as far as living musicians.

But, the problem I have with his playing, is while it is technically superb, it lacks alot of soul - alot of heart.

Now I have heart him play stuff that touched me, but fore the most part - and I have never met a person who disagrees with me on this statement (if you do, thats cool too, I absolutely respect your opinion) - Trey is a master of technical guitar playing...but a master of playing with passion and heart...no where close.

I used to live in NYC for 4 years.

I met Trey at the Lions Den, a club I promoted for. He was sitting in with Jennifer Hartswick Band that night and my pals who ran the club gave me the heads up he was going to be there. So...I came and got to meet him.

I met Page at S.O.B's where he was playing with the Spam All-Stars. My ex and I got pics with him before the show; I talked with him for about and hour after the show and got his autograph on the ticket.

I've met Mike a few times. First time was when I was at a Peter Rowan and Vassar Clements show at Tribecca Blues, where they were playing with the Zen Tricksters. I came in a little late and it was uber-crowded. I lost my ex in the crowd, so I turned around to find him, and who do I see right behind my shoulder...Gordo...we smoke and chat it up with him during the show and he eventually guests on the 3rd set. Second time was at a Phish show...no big story there. Third time was a the afforementioned Lions Den, where I talked with him for about 45 minutes.

I met Fish at the Vida Blue show at um...damn I forgot the name of that venue...its in NYC...like in the 50s on 6th Avenue...anyway...not important...there was a V.I.P bar where I was hanging watching the NFL playoffs during the show and met Fish there.

that is - REALLY - strange, what you said about trey being more of a technician than someone who plays with soul. because i always thought about it the complete opposite. hes a great guitarist and all, but i have never been moved so much by music as i do by his. even the really slow stuff that isnt hard to play. as far as im concerned, trey's ability to play with so much emotion is the reason why i listen to him. maybe i just havent been around long enough (im 20) and heard enough tunes from other musicians. but IMO the only guitarist who comes CLOSE is David Gilmour.

and about Trey's ego. I think what people mean when they say this, like what Orsino said about comparing their old stuff to their new stuff, is about Trey's weight compared to the rest of the band. I've only been to 3 shows, and the first one was in july of 03, but i could tell immediately that there was something seriously askew with the band. For most of the songs, it sounded like Trey was the guy we were supposed to be looking at, and the other guys were just in the backround, trying to set a rythym in there. Trey was the one with the screaming solos, trey was the one who talked to the audience, trey did most of the vocals, trey was in the front. NOW, none of this ever bothered me, because I love trey's music so much. the more the merrier. granted, it would be cool to hear them play more as a band, but i wasnt around for that, i never got to witness a phish show in the 90's so Im not used to that and i never expected it in the shows I did go to. i expected trey to kick some ass, and thats what he has done every time.

i don't believe anyone is the best....but for sure my favorite guitarist....he has blown me away on CD and live so many times!!!! i can't wait to see phish back again....but what i'm shocked by is all this "EGO" talk......everyone seems to push this word around alot when it comes to trey....but i've seen Phish many, many times, and he stops so mike can thump out the phattest bass lines....Coventry is a prime example of how democratic the playing is.....a great era known as 97-98 of great funk where he totally backed down....i think people want to seem smart, and "above" phish....god i hate pseudo-intelectuals...

Now I certainly respect your opinion, but mind you I've been seeing Phish since you were 6 years old and a good 70 times at that, the majority falling between 93 and 97. I live where they do, hang out with those who have been there since the very start working for the band, have met and talked to each member of the band on several occasion, see them all (with the exception of Trey) out on the town on a regular basis, so I think I have a pretty good grasp of what has happened with the band.

Phish broke up because of Trey and Trey alone. He is essentially the Sting of the jamband scene. He wanted to break away from Phish so he could do his music and be in full control of what goes on on stage. This desire is what lead to the demise of the band and loss of magic on stage.

The fact is that Phish became huge and with it had a large production company. Essentially, they needed to play to a certain number of people every year to support that company. The loss of magic and Trey's desire to do his own thing made this a hassle for him. So what did Trey decide was the best thing to do to avoid this hassle? He decided to break up the band and dissovle dinosian productions. The rest of the band had zero desire to do this. Within months of their break up, dinosian was disolved, many people lost their jobs and he signed on with the managers of Dave Mathews Band to promote his solo act.

That is the truth me and harpua. Trey stopped caring about Phish and wanted to do his own thing. They were a magical group for fifteen years when he was into it. The last five were a complete struggle as he only wanted to do his own thing.

If that isn't an ego, I don't know what is.
