I'm in a dance class at school, and it's mostly formal dancing (Waltz, Viennese Walts, Swing, Cha-Cha-Cha, Salsa, etc.) that follows a structure...I'm mainly interested in more free-style dancing like belly-dancing and break-dancing. Any bally-dancers on here? I'd really love to learn how to belly dance, and any tips would be sooo appreciated. Thanks in advance!
hellooo! so good to hear you wish to break away from the formal and start exploring your more spontaneous self. i'm a bellydancer and my advice to you is seek out a live instructor rather than a video or dvd. also, forget all your previous dance training when you're in the bellydance class, it's very rare that other forms are helpful when learning bellydance because it is so different in body position etc. than anything else. also a word of warning, bdance is extremely addictive, so be prepared to get obsessed if you stick with it
Thank you so much! There's a store around here where if you buy anything, they give you a coupon worthy of one free belly-dancing class...I'm thinking of taking it, because 1) belly-dancing just looks so cool and exotic, 2) I need more exercise and 3) I don't like formally structured dancing. So...Yeah, hopefully I'll really like it thank you again!
Cha-cha and salsa are only formal when you start out. Latin dance is all about passion and being in-tune with your partner. I'm trying to find a partner to take salsa and merengue lessons with me because we had a one day crash course in my Spanish class and it was so fun. It's all about letting your body move to the music.. nothing Latin is formal. Bellydancing is cool and all, but I tend to think of it as boring compared to Latin dance, and I know lots of bellydancers and have seen many in action. But then again, I'm just weird and obsessed with all things and people Spanish and Latin American.
I ight be taking a workshop with the Alvin Ailey dancers. Im so excited. I do tap and ballet and jazz mostly, but I really like Fosse technique if you know what that is. I love it! peace love and laughter amanda
I was in ballet for 9 years and modren dance for about 3 at one point it was all too much for me, I stoped morden alltogether and went from 5 classes and about 5 to 6 hours in the studio on saturdays alone to only one class a week, but the class was too hard beacuse I wanst there enough to improve, so i quit all togetehr I really regret it alot o the time and now Im too scared to go back
I'm a ballet dancer, and I've recently taken up belly-dancing. What a challenge! Anyway, I'm always up for a chat about dancing or anything. Feel free to aim me.
Yeah, I can already tell it's going to be a ton of work on my stomach muscles (luckily I can already do a belly roll!), so I've taken to doing 10-20 crunches a night...I hope to get up to maybe 100 a night, so I'll have strong muscles for when I finally find a belly-dancing class.
