71 I think-Leon Russell and the Shelter People at the Atlanta Municipal auditorium. Leon was in his stride, awe inspiring.
For me, there's a number of them. Jethro Tull in 1973 in Montreal (the old forum) and Toronto (maple leaf gardens)-they were touring the Passion Play and it was my first show in a big barn. Pink Floyd the following year in montreal outdoors at the old Autostad. Seeing Chilliwack in St. John's in around 70 or 71. Lately it's been any time I see Gov't Mule or Tool
Dunno about classic rock but my favorite concerts have been Amon Amarth in 2011 Behemoth in 2011 Motörhead in 2011 Insane Clown Posse in 2013
I saw the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers quote a few times, dozens of times over the years. Tedeschi Trucks Band puts on a wonderful show, I’ve seen them a few times (and Derek Trucks is the nicest guy you could ever want to meet). To me nothing has ever topped the Black Crowes, though, especially from 1995-‘97. The 2005-‘09 period was also incredible. I’ve seen them close to 50 times over the years, and they are the best live band I’ve ever witnessed.
I was at the Concert for Bangladesh. Another great one was Bob Dylan with The Band. I also saw in concert several great blues heroes: John Lee Hooker, J.B. Hutto, Willie Dixon and B.B. King. I was at the TAMI Show in 1964, with James Brown, the Stones and others. And in the 60s, this isn't rock, but I saw Count Basie and Duke Ellington, as well as Ella Fitzgerald. Oh yeah and Dizzie Gillespie. Lots of rock and folk acts, but these I mention here stand out.
The Chambers brothers Bob Dylan The Moody Blues Ritchie Havens Jethro Tull Janis Joplin-Big Brother Almost Jimi Hendrix , but he blew his amps out. Almost Pink Floyd , but plane got snowed in! Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis!
We used to go to a "teenage nightclub" (for teens only) that would get a lot of the sixties acts, Simon and Garfunkel, Ike and Tina Turner, The Turtles, Janis Ian, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, The Cyrkle, Bob Seger, Lou Christie, Aretha Franklin, Peaches and Herb, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Wilson Pickett, etc. The Raconteurs were a local band that went on to join Tommy James and become the Shondells. We'd go there all the time, unfortunatilty I can't remember who I saw there.
Shows I can almost remember were Jefferson Airplane, where I launched a wind up balsa wood airplane with the words "Jefferson Airplane" on it that made it to the stage, wherein Grace picked it up and sent it back into the crowd. The time they shut off Leon Russel's mike because he was ranting at a cop that was throwing some kid out for lighting up a J. That almost caused a riot. The time sat for three hours waiting for the Moody Blues because they lost their equipment somewhere in Canada. So when it arrived they played a loooong time. An early James Gang concert after which I partied with them in their hotel room. The time we saw the Kinks and they were drunk on stage, or was Argent...I think it was with Argent and they were throwing beer on us. They opened for Deep Purple which I can't remember anything off as we couldn't seem to stand up and just sat on the floor. But something happened with the Kinks, I think they were drunk too. The infamous three day Bull Island concert in Illinois, AKA the Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival. Similar to Woodstock as they expected 55,000 to show up and it ended up being 200,000 to 300,000 people, the road was backed up for 20 miles. Security was three White County deputy sheriffs. Little food, little water, porta potties overwhelmed, rain, riots, tons of drugs, one cow killed for food, two dead concert goers. In the end the stage burned down. A good time was held by almost all. Ans so on. Saw Crosby, Stills, and Nash once but Crosby refused to sing.
Crosby couldn't remember where he was Thank you for this legendary list of concerts, all of them in the Midwest? did you keep any ticket stubs?
No most in PA, we drove over 11 hours to Illinois. Yeah, I have a lot of stubs..wish I kept more of them. We had a thread years ago with peoples' lists of concerts they'd attended.
feel free to show stubs, the prices are always so crazy I just saw Leonid & Friends, Russian Internet-famous group- they do Chicago, Tower of Power & Earth, Wind & Fire tribute music- exceptional group, huge traveling fan base following from concert to concert. I live pretty rural so it's not easy to see groups, although my hometown sprouted Quicksilver Messenger Service back in the day, and was a frequent venue for the SF sound
Got to see Bob Marley on Maui, small venue. America opened for them. America was too stoned to play a decent set and didn't hardly get a reaction from the audience. Then Marley, Rita, the Wailers came on and I remember being completely under Marley's spell. He could make the audience feel every emotion he conveyed physically and thru his lyrics. Marley was so high and so captivating. Of course I was under the spell of Maui Wowie, so that helped too. Also being stuck in a shack in Kula with a bum leg and only 2 Marley tapes to listen to for weeks made me jones for any live music. To my utter amazement, like everyday miracles on Maui, he shows up on island during my stay! One concert I'm glad I didn't miss. I think he died the following year.
