“All Christians and men of good faith are therefore called upon today to fight, not only for the abolition of the death penalty – whether it is legal or illegal and in all its forms – but also to improve the conditions of incarceration to ensure that the human dignity of those deprived of their freedom is respected. And this, for me, is linked to life sentences. For a short time now, these no longer exist in the Vatican penal code. A sentence of life is a hidden death penalty. In recent decades a belief has spread that through public punishment the most diverse social problems can be resolved, as if different diseases could all be cured by the same medicine. These abuses will only stop if the international community firmly commits to recognising … the principle of placing human dignity above all else.” Pope Francis (2014).
There are some humans that will commit acts so heinous that they do not belong to remain among the living. A man that rapes a 3 year old--( yes --it happened) and kills that child--(or not) does not deserve to continue to live. There are many other horrible cases , which I will not describe--that fall into the same category of --"so what would you have by rehabbing those that are so warped as to commit unbelievably cruel acts"?? Who cares what christiands think about the subject? (or anything) They have been responsible for millions of deaths over time.
Remember Richard Speck? The guy who killed 8 nurses? There were (are, I suppose) videos of him living in prison enjoying his life , having plenty to eat, enjoying sex and smoking dope. THAT IS WRONG. He should have been killed.
And when we don't do that, some often repeat their inhuman acts again. What's the purpose in allowing that? Victims don't matter?
