Congressman Carlos Giménez. What does he say that's inaccurate?

You don't get to pretend it's the Democrats fault when the President of the United States just went to the Supreme Court so he can keep denying food to hungry children.

The Republican Senate needs sixty votes to pass the new funding bill and reopen the government. There are 53 Republican senators. The last vote resulted in 51 Republican, 2 Democratic, and 1 Independent vote for a total of 54 votes to pass a stopgap funding bill and end the shut down.
But 60 votes are required and they are short by 6 votes.

42 Democrats, 1 Republican, and 1 Independent opposed the bill.
1 Democrat and 1 Republican abstained.

The Republicans need 6 votes. If they persuade the 2 Republicans and 1 Independent to back the bill they are down to only needing 3 Democrats out of 43.

The Democrats, 1 Republican, and 1 Independent refuse to back the bill becasue it ends subsidies for the Affordable Care Act which will lead to about 24 million people either loosing healthcare or being forced to pay extravagant sums for that care.
They also want funds reinstated for heath care that were removed by Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill". The bill will cut funds to Medicare which the Congressional Budget Office states will result in causing 11.8 million people to lose their health insurance by 2034.

If I added it up correctly that means the Republicans want to cut health care funds to 34 million people.

The enhanced benefits were set to expire because the Republicans would not make them permanent because they think they cost too much, $350 billion over 10 years.....meanwhile they, and Trump, are proposing a tax cut for the rich amounting to $4.5 trillion dollars.

So the Democrats are saying the money is there if the rich are taxed fairly.
For example Elon Musk's Tesla which earned $2.3 billion in 2024 paid ...zero in Federal taxes.
Musk himself only has to paid SS taxes on the first $176,100 dollars he earns in any year.
He earns about $90 million per day or $3.75 million per hour.

The Republicans say, "Oh vote to end the shut down and then we'll fix all that," instead of saying let's fix all that before we vote.
"We'll fix health care latter on...we have a secret plan, which we can't revile at this time."
    Trust us (and Trump).

The Democrats for some strange reason don't believe them.

It sure as hell isn't the Democrat's shutdown.
Besides gutting health care to 34 million people to fund a $4.5 trillion dollar tax cut for the rich, the Republicans insist upon cutting food assistance to 40 million people; children, the elderly, the disabled, and eliminating the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps about 6 million poor people afford to heat their homes.
Rather than negotiate a more equitable bipartisan resolution that serves the interests of the majority of the American people instead of just the richest 1%, Republicans steadfastly refuse and simply went home.

If you or I walked off the job (or had an approval rating of 15%), we'd get fucking fired.
Something to contemplate as midterm elections draw nigh.

Musk and his like will receive Social Security benefits, why. Would like to see SS cut off for the wealthy recipients they do not need them.

When did the tax cut happen? This year?

Democrats do seem to have a role with this shutdown. Hakeem Jeffries takes a question about Democrats and a Clean Resolution which Democrats supported in the past.

Democrats want to save health insurance, but instead we are losing SNAP and airports around the country are buckling. I don't know which is worse.

An argument about healthcare shouldn't be affecting the airports. The government is broken.

They should be careful or Trump will use this as an excuse the seize even more power.

They should just reopen the government and then change the laws when they havr majority after the next presidential election.

That's what is wrong with the political system in this country. It swings back and forth every 4-8 years.

How adorable; someone who thinks there's going to be a presidential election in 1028.

So, Trumpster spouting off about sending each American Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) as a kind of tarriff break- bribe. Why not boost the national minimum wage up from its floor of $7.50 per hour? Those who need it the most.
Scarsdale, Calabasas, Beacon Hill and Mainline-Germantown do not need the Two Grand.
It is our $30T. debt that drives our inflation Trump could care less.

    Thanks for that.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the last threatened shutdown in March of last year was over a clean resolution which the Republicans proposed, not the Democrats.
The majority of the Democrats would not vote for the CR as it called for a decrease in non defense funding by $13 billion dollars an increase in defense spending by $6 billion and would allow for Trump to continue to destroy the government.

They correctly pointed out that the Republicans refused to debate these items and as they didn't have the votes they needed, they would just shut the government down. Same as this time.
As Pelosi said, you don't threaten to shut down the government to advance your agenda. The Republicans refused to negotiate then threaten a shutdown, and then they blamed the Dems when they didn't cave in to all their demands.
The Reid clip seems to be from 2011, and I would have to see the context in which it was made. I can't find it on the net.

In March the Democrats caved in to the Republican demands as they feared a shutdown would be worse.
Again, this time the Democrats caved, giving the Republicans everything they demand without them compromising.
It seems the Democrats never learn how to stand and fight.

So now we have a clean resolution in which funding for millions on healthcare ends just at the time it's needed. Healthcare costs are now projected to rise 26 to 30% in 2026.
The Republicans refused to negotiate on how to address those costs, demanding they get their way.

So now we know, any time the Republicans don't get everything they want....shut down the government and blame the Democrats..

If you sit down to a game of chess and your opponent sucker-punches you in the face, you're not going to win the game by getting better at chess.
