Social media its very anti social I get ignored more on social media than in real life even in dating apps what is the point of "social" media if people are anti social what is the point of dating apps if people are not trying to date it seems people as a whole don't like human contact way different than how it used to be people back then were more outgoing and social you can have a conversation with someone and didn't even know them out of the blue. I even heard people hitch hiking
As someone who hitchhiked around the world (literally) for years, I can confirm that things have changed for the worse. It should be called anti-social media because most people who spend too much time online have no real social life. And the algorithms are there to keep you clicking, not to facilitate meaningful dialogue. The effects of this dramatic social change are now obvious and soon to get even worse. The impacts just politically are horrendous. People are being manipulated on a scale like never before.
What parts of the world have you been. I remember how easy it was just to talk to girls people were so much more outgoing what happened
Completely agree. People are sucked into it without realizing the consequences of blindly repeating everything they read. They don't think anymore, they are (a)social robots.
That people are so mean and nasty these days--could it be that so few have so much and so many have so little? Oh--I'm sorry. Don't hurt me. I'll shut up and get back on the treadmill.
Define "social" media? Dont do "social" media anymore, no accounts......i do follow/watch what it does too people/society..............the influence it has on our younger generations(smartphones) *sigh* Not saying you cant meet "good" people on the interwebz(gaming/old internet) .........................just current "social" media and mainstream media running with it....... Mzzls
I just posted a long winded reply on another thread about social media, so I won't go that deep here. All I'll say is that people on the internet today, whether it's X/Twitter, BlueSky, TruthSocial, Instagram, Facebook, etc., are not anymore different than the same people I saw online back in the mid 90s when I got dial up internet using a 33.6k modem. In my list of platforms above, the oldest noted was Facebook. But what was there before that? Did social media begin there? Nope. Social Media noun - websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. We can go back to MySpace, ICQ, MSN/Windows Messenger, Forums just like this one, and even Chat Rooms. There have been many types of Social Media. And I can say with first hand experience that there were just as many assholes back in the 90s and 2000s as there are today. Even online games. I played a bunch in college and as soon as a girl popped on to play and used their mic, all the dorks would harass her until she muted them or left the server. Surprise surprise, that kind of improved these days, though marginally. There are more female gamers out there today. A lot more female streamers. It's becoming normalised that girls play video games too. (they always did) - But there will always be the ass clowns online who want to ruin things for others for their own amusement. Even today you can find videos of girls on mics getting harassed exact as they did 20+ years ago. Check some of the popular streamers and the crap they put up with. What has changed today, however, is how politicians and our governments are using social media for their own gains. For the last 20+ years, it was us users dealing with other users on a platform. It was one on one, so to speak. The governments had their place, news agencies had their place, and we had our places online. We all knew where to go for information, or what to avoid. Now news agencies, our governments and us regular folk are all placed within the same platforms, mixing facts with fiction. News and the Government/Politicians are trying to get those clicks and up votes like everyone else. In order to get those clicks, views, and up votes, they need to sensationalise and twist the truth in their favour and against their competition. News agencies have resorted to using more pundits with more bias, spouting off random opinions that aren't anymore valid than your or my opinion..... But because they got a fancy desk and backdrop, people think their opinions are more valuable, more valid. They're not. All of this muddies the water when it comes to truth and facts online. It's all blended together and one big mess. Granted, many news sources will still report factual information, but many still can't help themselves when it comes to squeezing in some political bias or agenda, because they turned into almost a marketing business, and if they don't say the thing their target audience wants to hear, that target audience will go somewhere else. Then they're out of business, and since their competition is doing the same thing, they do it too. It's a vicious cycle..... And politicians are the same. The only thing we can do is be responsible for our own actions and decisions. Use our own brains, confirm what is factual and make our own informed decisions. We don't need some random loud mouth pundit telling us what we should think. .... Nor do we need some politician to make a post, or upload a video, or do some interview telling us what we should think. In a representative democracy, we vote them into office. We give them a job to do and that job is for them to work for us and do what we want them to do. It's the whole damn point of voting for them in the first place. Yet so many people seem to forget this and think of a Prime Minister or President is a "Leader" of the country. They "Lead" their respective political parties, but they are not Kings/Queens and they're certainly not Gods. They represent our nations on the world stage, and while they have the power and authority to make serious decisions, those decisions they make must always be in the interest of the people who voted them into having that power. The interests of the nation as a whole. To better everyone's lives. If they can't do that or they are only after that power for themselves and their own greed, then removal is necessary & a new representative is required. Thats the problem today. Many people have forgotten this and rather than think for themselves and make informed decisions, they leave it all up to others and they just follow along without question. Maybe they think it's easier this way or they can't be blamed when things turn to crap, but has this approach ever actually made anyone's life better? Nope. Instead, they're told the reason why everything is now worse, isn't because of the politicians they blindly followed, but it's all blamed on some other group. It's not the fault of the politicians they support and it isn't their own fault because they didn't do anything. They just blindly followed. So it has to be the fault of this other group, because that's what they're told..... That's what media pundits are telling them too. Thats the root problem. It's not social media. It's how some are using it, blurring the previously defined lines, and people forgetting how all this crap was supposed to work. Keep the public fighting amongst themselves and blaming each other, and they'll be too busy to see how screwed up things are & you can keep your power (which was never yours to begin with) Left wing? Right wing? It's all hot trash and people need to figure out how to dig themselves out of it. They're telling you what is left and what it right. If you don't follow along and tow the line, you're not a part of that group.... But who wants to be? Decisions that affect our everyday lives and our nation's as a whole should be on a case by case basis and balanced by facts. A problem is a problem. A solution is a solution. Neither a problem or a solution leans towards any political spectrum. If no solution to a problem can be made to satisfy everyone, then a compromise will have to do, so things can move forward. And a compromise is when both sides gets something but neither side wins. So when it comes to social media being a terrible thing, it's not really. Its core hasn't changed in 20+ years. How it's used has changed and by who. You'll meet nice people online and you'll meet a few jerks. Think about social media not as a town or a village, but a city loaded with a lot of different people. A small town or a tight knit community can be overall friendly, but walk down a long street in a big city and pass by hundreds of people? Stop some of them and have a chat..... You'll encounter some nice people and you'll certainly meet some assholes who might stab you. That's Social Media..... And I got long winded again. Oh well.
The real problem is simply that the online Trolls are now running the Government. That was not the case 20+ years ago. Trump is nothing more than a Troll who attracts and encourages other trolls to join in. And here in reality on the Hipforums, we know not to feed the trolls, yet most of America, especially the richest person not only allow trolls to persist, but actually alter algorithms to promote them. If not for the online Trolling that occurs, there would've been no Jan 6, no Trump presidency at all, and the world would be a much better place today.
Interesting comments, but I think it all boils down to trolls on the Internet, either government officials, news outlets, or nutjobs, they have abused the platforms to the max creating chaos and a lot of instability in order to achieve their goals.
Indeed and can't argue your point, however my perspective comes from someone who isn't from the US. While the government from my home country and the government in my current country still like to stoke the divisions and bias, it's certainly not on the level of what is occurring in the US. But still, trolls only have the power that is given to them by others. I've never had interest in Twitter and when Musk took over and made it X, I had even less interest. Unfortunately, I am only one person, but this one person will not provide him, or others like him, any kind of support. But some people have also taken action and created a rival platform, BlueSky. I jumped on and it's easier to navigate and easier to filter out the trash. Though there is less trash there and more moderation, I personally go onto social media to have a break from things from the real world. So when I see others still talking politics, though more left leaning than the right leaning of X, I'm not interested and I'll filter that stuff out too. But a new platform gives users a new place to go, and when that happens, the power given to the old platform is taken away. Nothing lasts forever and in time, Twotter/X will go the way of MySpace. Unfortunately for now, we all, no matter where we live, have to put up with this BS of media and politics taking over our social media platforms.
It's 2025, and automated chatbots are now officially running the entire show on many popular sites. It's precisely for this reason that I left one of the biggest sites of them all. The toxicity level skyrocketed through the roof in the last few months. People will be leaving those platforms in droves. Nobody enjoys swimming in garbage. Smaller sites like this one will surely be getting many more persons interested in jumping onboard.
You're welcome to invite your friends and those actual humans you met on the other sites to join us here. The more the merrier!
Thank you so much! I've been visiting this space for a couple of days now, and I'm really liking the vibe here. Everyone is very nice
I would definitely do that, but other than having some wonderful interactions with some members when I first joined, no real relationships ever developed with anyone. Thank you for saying so though, it was really nice of you. ✨
Social media was fine until the owners got greedy and monetized it. Then they all just became propaganda websites and fake news outlets
