Yep. My rights are your rights. Woke strikes me as the method for making the populace emotionally weaker.
How do I say what Democrats are without insulting most of the members at this site? It's quite alright to say what Republicans are with all the hate we can muster, though. Thanks kindly for your even-handedness. Inspirational.
The problem with all of your posts is that they are sloganistic and devoid of reasoned argument and facts to back them up.
The last time we treated Fascism with tolerance and forbearance; as just another philosophy, equally worthy of respect and consideration as any other in the marketplace of ideas, 60 million people were killed. No; we're really not interested in hearing yet another iteration of aggrieved White male victimhood.
The "woke" movement started with Marcus Garvey in 1923. Lead Belly, used it in 1938 in his song, "Scottsboro Boys". In 1962 the New York Times Magazine published an article by African-American William Melvin Kelley, "If You're Woke You Dig It" In 1971 the play Garvey Lives! included the line, "I been sleeping all my life. And now that Mr. Garvey done woke me up, I'm gon' stay woke. And I'm gon help him wake up other black folk." ~ Wikipedia From 200 to 2010 woke also had the meaning of being aware of infidelity. In 2014 Black Lives Matter used the term to bring awareness to police brutality And then it spread in meaning and usage. By 2019 the right wing Republicans starting using the term to mock anyone who supported social reform and justice. They see it as a vehicle to insult those they don't agree with by promoting fear and thus gaining votes. I see it now used mostly by those who champion hate and seek to walk back most social gains we have earned in the 20th and 21st century. The same old story, take a positive action, theory, subject, etc., lie about it, then force you to defend it.
The definitions given above are too broad for my liking. One can be aware, open-minded, compassionate, thoughtful, humble and kind but not woke. And the trouble with De Santis's definition is it doesn't just apply to America, I'm in New Zealand and there are plenty of wokesters knocking around. Will come back with my definition after giving it some more thought. I know what I want to say just can't find the words right now.
Damn you to woke me so early in the morning! It was the big bark of a dog. Looking out AWAKE I see my dog is asleep nearby.
There's a sense of arrogance in so many of these claims that bothers me. The people claiming to be woke offer definitions that paint themselves as smarter, better, more informed, morally superior.
Do you have specific people in mind, and specific issues you think are characteristically "woke"? We have yet to pin this down. If we accept DeSantis' definition (“the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them”), it's hard for me to believe that people who believe this aren't smarter, better informed, and/or morally superior to people who deny it.
Well John Stewart's quote above. The implication being that people who aren't woke don't know their history and if they did it would be self evident that woke is the correct way to be. History's enormous. People can look at history, see different things and reach different conclusions.
Wokeness isn't just broadly kindness, compassion and awareness of social ills, it's hyper focused on two or three issues and has extremely narrow prescriptions for what should be done about them. Even discussing them is often off-limits.
Is that why you haven't identified them? We're pretty open-minded here. I think we could probably deal with the two or three issues if you could tell us specifically what they are.
Yes, I'm easing into it. OK here goes as I see it a woke person has to be concerned with racism, sexism and any oppression someone faces because of their sexual preference. It's overwhelmingly about identity but climate change is also a necessary concern of the woke. Imagine a community organization that's kind, compassionate, well informed and all those other positive words above that helps small business owners for instance. Are they woke?
