Kevin McCarthy made a 'huge tactical' mistake by not putting Republicans on the Jan. 6 panel, politics expert says

 

During the summer of 2021 when the Jan. 6 committee was formed, McCarthy said he would conduct his own investigation of the riot at the Capitol while the Democrats were still controlling the House. It hasn't happened.

After nearly being injured or killed on Jan. 6 and having an angry phone call with Trump during the riot, McCarthy submitted to Trump for his support to try to become the next Speaker of the House.

 

Trump has complained that the Jan. 6 committee doesn't have enough Republicans. He should be blaming McCarthy.

McCarthy rejected the idea of a bipartisan Congressional commission to investigate the insurrection at the Capitol.

McCarthy rejected the idea of a committee in July 2021 because Pelosi wouldn't allow two of his recommendations, Banks and Jordan, to be on the committee. He said he would form his own committee but hasn't.

He rejected a Jan. 6 committee request for testimony about the heated phone call he had with Trump during the riot.

Jordan was on the phone with Trump on Jan. 6 but has had selective amnesia about it.

He first gave a sketchy remark by said he wasn't sure if he had a phone call with Trump on Jan.6 because he calls Trump numerous times.

He later admitted that he did but supposedly couldn't remember details. He said it happened after the riot.

Jordan admitted he had multiple calls with Trump on Jan. 6 and that one of them occurred during the riot.

McCarthy forgave Trump only a couple weeks after the insurrection at the Capitol.

Trump forgave McCarthy after a recording was released of McCarthy saying he wanted Trump to resign after the riot. McCarthy said, "I've had it with this guy."

He made a false report to the police, committed arson, made various fraudulent insurance claims and collected on some of them, and collected GoFundMe money based on false claims.

He's the type of person Trump would pardon and hire as a senior staff member for a second term.

That's probably part of the reason Trump was in an armored SUV after his speech at the Ellipse and not the Beast limo.

The statements in defense of Trump that he couldn't have possibly reached the steering wheel when the alleged altercation between him and the Secret Service occurred are moot because he wasn't in the limo.

 

The Supreme Court response was a one-sentence statement.
