Mo Brooks wanted the U.S. DOJ to defend him for cases brought against him related to Trump's riot at the Capitol.

Brook claimed that he was acting in his capacity as a member of Congress when he spoke at Trump's pre-riot rally at the Ellipse.

    The DOJ rejected his request.

He essentially asked the DOJ to defend him in a situation where the DOJ could be investigating him and eventually bring criminal charges against him.

That's as twisted as having Jim Jordan on the Jan 6. committee to investigate possible criminal activity by Jim Jordan.

Trump referenced Ruby Freeman 18 times during his call to Raffensperger.

He was immersed in a truther narrative that she and her daughter rigged the election in Georgia.

Trump feeling fallout of Capitol attack hearings as allies abandon ship

    excerpt:

"Trump “has tuned into every hearing” and has grown increasingly irate – to “the point of about to scream at the TV”, according to a close adviser – with what he views as the “lack of defense by his Capitol Hill allies”, the Washington Post reported.

He is possibly aware that, while the hearings come too late to force his resignation and may or may not cause the justice department to press criminal charges, they seem to be inflicting greater political damage than anyone imagined.

Thursday’s fifth hearing served up more of the same in the Cannon Caucus Room which, somewhat reminiscent of a grand ornate ballroom with curtains closed and lights on, is bringing a gravitas to the nailing of Trump that no trickle of media revelations or tell-all memoirs can."

Trump feeling fallout of Capitol attack hearings as allies abandon ship

    excerpt:

"Once again, all went smoothly and efficiently. There were no interruptions, objections, points of order or spoiling tactics. And that is said to have made Trump furious. He is especially critical of Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader in the House, for boycotting the committee instead of giving pro-Trump Republicans a voice on it.

Trump told Punchbowl News, “In retrospect, I think it would have been very smart” to put more Republicans on the committee. “The Republicans don’t have a voice. They don’t even have anything to say.”

McCarthy apparently gambled that this would allow Republicans to write off the hearings as illegitimate, partisan and an attempt to distract from more pressing issues such as inflation. But the presence of Cheney, Kinzinger and more than a dozen Republican witnesses have undermined that argument.

Moreover, McCarthy, who wants to be speaker of the House of Representatives, may have forgotten that Trump pays attention to TV, where the hearings are inescapable and will run into next month, prolonging the agony. Even if they are not penetrating the Trump base, they are penetrating Trump himself."

Opinion: What gives DeSantis an edge over Trump - CNN

    excerpt:

"If DeSantis runs, he will do so with much more government experience under his belt than Trump had in 2016. After serving as governor, as well as a US House Representative, DeSantis will give Republican voters an opportunity to support a candidate who is red to the core, with decorum and experience to boot. It also helps that as a governor, he can still position himself as an outsider to Washington. And if DeSantis faces off against Trump in the Republican primary, the Florida governor will inevitably paint the former President as part of the establishment.

Trump, of course, is weighed down by his own baggage. The devastating findings of the House select committee on January 6 could help DeSantis. While there are certainly Republicans who will see the committee’s investigation as a witch-hunt, others in the party who recognize the ugliness of the US Capitol attack might prefer a candidate who isn’t, as far as we know, directly associated with the attempt to overturn the election.

The governor is also drawing support from a number of quarters. Many figures in Rupert Murdoch’s conservative media empire are starting to tout DeSantis as a smarter alternative in 2024 than Trump. Meanwhile, Politico reported that DeSantis is securing financial support from some of Trump’s biggest donors."

Opinion: What gives DeSantis an edge over Trump | CNN

    excerpt:

"The Florida governor, who was educated at Yale and Harvard Law School, has displayed a grasp of public policy and governance that Trump has never shown. As Dexter Filkins writes in the New Yorker, “Both men claim to channel the rage of an electorate that feels sneered at and dismissed by liberal institutions. But while Trump, with his lazy, Barnumesque persona, projects a fundamental lack of seriousness, DeSantis has an intense work ethic, a formidable intelligence, and granular understanding of policy.” Though many Trump supporters dismiss the importance of expertise, there would still be great political appeal to a tough, right-wing conservative who can also joust on the details of policy."

Sidney Powell confirms Trump asked her to be special counsel to investigate 2020 election.

Sidney Powell Confirms to Jan. 6 Committee That Donald Trump Asked Her to Be 'Special Counsel to Address the Election Issues'

    excerpt:

"So-called “Kraken” lawyer Sidney Powell, whose failed litigation to overturn the Joe Biden’s victory left her sanctioned by a federal judge and fighting ethics complaints, told the Jan. 6 Committee that former President Donald Trump asked her to be special counsel to investigate the 2020 election.

That Trump sought to install Powell in that role had been widely reported since December 2020, just months after the election. Some seven months later, Powell’s schemes to overturn Joe Biden’s victory would lead to her fighting to keep her law license after a federal judge sanctioned her for her “historic and profound abuse of the judicial process.”

Powell confirmed the conversation to the committee, whose Thursday hearing showed the bizarre theories Trump and his allies peddled in an effort to discredit the election."

Johnson now says he helped coordinate effort to get false slates to Pence as Jan. 6 hearing continues

    excerpt:

    • After initially claiming to be "basically unaware" of an effort by his staff to get fake presidential elector documents to Vice President Mike Pence, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson said Thursday he coordinated with a Wisconsin attorney to pass along such information.

    • He said in a Thursday interview on WIBA-AM that he had since discovered the documents came from Pennsylvania U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, and acknowledged he coordinated with Dane County attorney Jim Troupis and his chief of staff by text message that morning to get to Pence a document Troupis described as regarding "Wisconsin electors."

Scott Perry's name surfaces repeatedly in Trump's quest to overthrow the 2020 election.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/06/23/scott-perry/

    excerpt:

"Of all the fantastical false claims of fraud and vote manipulation in the 2020 presidential election, “Italygate” was one of the most extreme. And Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) was at the heart of bringing it to Donald Trump’s attention.

This particular allegation of fraud centered around what one former Justice Department official described Thursday as an “absurd” claim: that an Italian defense contractor had conspired with senior CIA officials to use military satellites to flip votes from Trump to Joe Biden. As The Washington Post has reported, the theory was pushed by a Virginia horse-country socialite who once gave an extended television interview from a 22-bedroom mansion that she repeatedly described as her own, even though it was not.

But as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol demonstrated Thursday, Italygate also made its way to the highest levels of the U.S. government. The committee showed Dec. 31, 2020, text messages between Perry and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows that included a YouTube video about it, with Perry asking: “Why can’t we just work with the Italian government?”

Meadows discussed the claim “frequently,” according to Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), who led the questioning during the committee hearing on Thursday, which focused on Trump’s efforts to pressure the Justice Department to help overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Perry also pressed acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen to investigate. “I told him this whole thing about Italy had been debunked,” Rosen said during Thursday’s hearing. Another former Justice official who testified Thursday, Richard Donoghue, said the theory was “pure insanity” and “patently absurd.”

That wasn’t Perry’s only involvement in encouraging Trump to get the vote overturned. The committee obtained records from the National Archives showing that Perry was among the Republican members of Congress who met with the president in the Oval Office on Dec. 21, 2020. That day, Meadows tweeted that the meeting’s purpose was “preparing to fight back against mounting evidence of voter fraud. Stay tuned.”"

Kelli Ward has been subpoenaed by a grand jury.

In the weeks leading up to the insurrection, she was posting videos about how so much was happening to overthrow the election including fake electors.

Arizona GOP chair Kelli Ward subpoenaed in fake elector scheme

    excerpt:

"Kelli Ward, the head of the Arizona Republican Party, and her husband, Michael, received grand jury subpoenas from the Department of Justice regarding their involvement in a scheme to send fake electors to Congress on Jan. 6, 2021.

The subpoena for the Wards first was reported by the website Politico, which cited an unnamed source it said was familiar with the matter.

Alexander Kolodin, an attorney for the Wards, said to The Republic that “this is an investigation based on allegations that our clients engaged in core First Amendment-protected activity, namely petitioning Congress for a redress of grievances.”

Kolodin clarified that the investigation to which he was referring was the Department of Justice investigation.

Kolodin represented the Wards in another subpoena matter.

The House Select Committee investigating the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, had subpoenaed the Wards’ phone records. The Wards filed a lawsuit against the committee in federal court in Phoenix fighting the disclosure of those records. That lawsuit was still pending, with the committee asked to reply by early July.

Kelli Ward also was subpoenaed for testimony and documents by the House Select Committee in February."
