Biden age doubts fuel fears about American gerontocracy

    excerpt:

Why it matters: Diversity and technology are making the workplace, home life and culture unrecognizable for many older leaders. That can leave geriatric leadership of government out of step with everyday life in America — and disconnected from the voters who give them power.
    • Washington is run by Biden, 79 … House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 82 … Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a comparatively youthful 71 … and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, age 80.
    • Dr. Anthony Fauci, running the U.S. pandemic response, is 81.
It's a global phenomenon: Pope Francis is 85. Prince Charles, Britain's next king, is 73.
    • And it's not just the top of the ticket. The average age of the Senate at the beginning of this Congress (last year) was 64.3 years — the oldest in history. Seven senators are in their 80s.
    • But Democrats now are privately debating whether Biden, already the oldest president, will be fit to run for reelection. At the end of a second term, he'd be 86.

Trump has started to ask advisors about how to attack ex-Cabinet members and political allies who might run for president against him in 2024: report

    excerpt:

"But the former president is already thinking of how to counter any arguments against his candidacy.

Per The Post, Trump has been asking his advisors about how he can go after former Cabinet members and political allies who may decide to run — as well as Republican figures that he has backed in the past — in assessing ways to handle his potential competitors if he launched a White House bid.

Two advisors told The Post that a candidacy by Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida would be an issue, given his high level of popularity with a vast segment of Trump's Make America Great Again political base.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, who was Trump's No. 2, declined to rule out running against Trump for the GOP nomination in a recent New York Times interview.

"We'll go where we're called," he told the newspaper, saying he would rely on his faith to help guide him toward a decision. "That's the way Karen and I have always approached these things.""

Trump makes last-minute pitch for Arrington in challenge to Mace in SC | The Hill

    excerpt:

"Former President Trump on Sunday called former South Carolina state Rep. Katie Arrington’s (R) policies “perfect” in a last-minute pitch for her primary challenge this week to Rep. Nancy Mace (R), who has blamed Trump for the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Trump endorsed Arrington in February one day after she announced her now-closely watched primary challenge in the coastal district, which will on Tuesday test the influence of Trump and debunked claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election."

Trump’s inner circle pushed back as he claimed the election was stolen. Here are the latest developments.

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON — Former President Donald J. Trump’s attorney general testified that he believed the president had grown delusional as he insisted on pushing false claims of widespread election fraud that he was told repeatedly were groundless, according to a videotaped interview played on Monday by the special committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack.

“He’s become detached from reality if he really believes this stuff,” William P. Barr, the former attorney general, told the panel, adding, “There was never an indication of interest in what the actual facts were.”

In a hearing focused on the origins and spread of Mr. Trump’s lie of a stolen election, the panel played excerpts from Mr. Barr’s testimony, as well as that of a chorus of campaign aides and administration officials who recounted, one after the other, how his claims of election irregularities were bogus.

    • The session began with the testimony of Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman, Bill Stepien, who testified on video that he had told his boss on election night that he had no basis for declaring victory, but Mr. Trump insisted on doing so anyway.

Mr. Trump “thought I was wrong. He told me so,” Mr. Stepien said in his interview.

    • Then the panel laid out how Mr. Trump’s initial lie gave way to more falsehoods of election fraud, which grew more outlandish as time wore on. It made extensive use of the recorded testimony from Mr. Barr, who said he had told Mr. Trump repeatedly that his claims of fraud were “bullshit.”"

'Intoxicated' Rudy Giuliani wanted Trump to declare victory on election night, campaign staff says

    excerpt:

"A drunken Rudy Giuliani advised then-President Donald Trump to declare victory on election night 2020 despite the fact that Fox News had called Arizona for Joe Biden and votes had yet to be fully counted in other battleground states, former advisers to the president told the Jan. 6 select committee.

During Monday's public hearing, the committee played edited excerpts of testimony given by Giuliani, former Trump campaign chairman Bill Stepien, former Trump senior adviser Jason Miller, Ivanka Trump and others that detailed the former New York mayor's actions on election night."

Delaware father, son facing trial in U.S. Capitol riot cases

    excerpt:

"A federal trial is scheduled to start on Monday for a father and son from Delaware charged with storming the U.S. Capitol together. The father was photographed carrying a Confederate battle flag. U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden will hear testimony without a jury for the trial of Kevin Seefried and his son, Hunter.

The Seefrieds, who are from Laurel, waived their right to a jury trial, which means McFadden will decide their cases. The judge has criticized prosecutors' handling of Capitol riot cases. He has acquitted one Capitol riot defendant of all charges and partially acquitted another after separate bench trials earlier this year."

Officer hailed as hero testifies at Capitol riot trial

Officer hailed as hero testifies at Capitol riot trial

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON (AP) — A police officer lauded for his bravery during the U.S. Capitol riot testified Monday that a man carrying a Confederate battle flag jabbed at him with the flagpole before joining the mob that chased him up a staircase.

In his first public testimony since the Jan. 6, 2021, siege, Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman described his encounter with the flag-toting Delaware man, Kevin Seefried, and his adult son, Hunter, at their trial on charges that they stormed the Capitol together.

Goodman has been hailed as a hero for leading a group of rioters away from the Senate chamber and up a set of stairs to an area where other officers were waiting. Goodman also directed Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, to turn around and head away from the mob.

Goodman recalled seeing Kevin Seefried standing alone in an archway and telling him to leave. Instead, Seefried cursed at him and jabbed at the officer with the base end of the flagpole three or four times without making contact with him, Goodman said.

“He was very angry. Screaming. Talking loudly,” Goodman said. “Complete opposite of pleasant.”

U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden is hearing testimony without a jury for the Seefrieds’ bench trial, which started Monday. The Seefrieds waived their right to a jury trial, which means McFadden will decide their cases."

Trump wanted to be at the Capitol riot because his presence would have been the key to a successful coup, historian speculates

    excerpt:

"Former President Donald Trump's presence at the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attack would have been a critical factor in accomplishing a successful coup that day, Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian and a professor at New York University who studies fascism and authoritarian leaders, said.

Ben-Ghiat told CNN's Jim Acosta on Saturday that it was "interesting" how recent reports said Trump had wanted to march with his supporters to the Capitol but was stopped by the Secret Service.

That revelation was first published in an April interview that the former president gave to The Washington Post.

Last week, The Post also reported that the Secret Service initially formed a quick plan to transport Trump from the White House to the Capitol following his speech at the Ellipse on the day of the attack. Despite pressure from the then-president, the effort did not come to fruition, and Trump was taken back to the White House instead.

"This is consistent with if you're having a coup, and you've summoned everybody, and you expect to be anointed as the head of illegitimate government. You have to be there," Ben-Ghiat said, referring to Trump."

Bannon threatens to impeach ‘everybody’ over possible Trump indictment

    excerpt:

"Former Trump administration advisor and alt-right personality Steve Bannon threatened to impeach “everybody at DoJ” after it was suggested that his former boss could face an indictment for his alleged role in the January 6 Capitol riot.

The incendiary comments were delivered by the Conservative podcast host on his show “War Room: Pandemic” ahead of the January 6 House select committee second public hearing, scheduled to begin at 10am EST on Monday.

In the clip, which was shared by attorney Ron Filipkowski late Sunday night, the far-right agitator specifies that he’ll be coming after “everybody” at the DoJ with impeachments, including Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“Trump won the presidency. And he is the legitimate president of the United States and your guy’s illegitimate, and the American people are awakening to that,” the former Trump advisor began, alluding to the ex-president’s “big lie” that the 2020 elections were stolen through unproven claims of voter fraud."

Yes, something he didn't like and something he didn't do.

Then again, why should he? When you have a bunch of cowardly 'yes-men' working for you and tens of millions of voters willing to accept anything you say......not to mention thousands of of them literally ready to go to war for you........I can't think of a reason he should learn how government works or care about anything but himself.

Trump Reportedly Wants to Announce a 2024 Bid Outside Ron DeSantis’s House

    excerpt:

"As the January 6 committee’s first pair of public hearings have made abundantly clear, Donald Trump should never be allowed to hold power again given his propensity for lies and violence when things don’t go his way. Unfortunately, Trump is apparently strongly considering making another run for office, and while we don’t know exactly when it might happen, he reportedly wants to do it near Ron DeSantis’s house to rub the Florida governor and would-be contender’s nose in it. Yes, the presidential-ness just oozes!

Rolling Stone reports that Trump, unsurprisingly, would like to kick off a bid for the White House with a flashy rally, including fireworks, and not only wants to do it in Florida to “assert his dominance over an ascendant DeSantis” but has asked people if they know of venues near the governor’s Tallahassee mansion. Is he going to rent a skywriting plane and have it put a giant “F--k you, Ron” over the guy’s place too? Honestly, there’s truly nothing we should put past him. “One time that he did bring up the Florida [launch] scenario was quickly followed by him commenting on how terrible DeSantis was at public speaking and commanding an audience…[and that he’s] lacking in so much charisma and he’s so boring that Florida Republicans would leave Ron immediately for Trump [in a 2024 match-up],” a person who has spoken to the ex-president about DeSantis multiple times told Rolling Stone. The same person, and one other, also told the outlet that Trump has been telling people around him that the Florida governor is “overrated,” and that he would easily beat him. (According to one poll, that may not be the case.)"

Giuliani's star election witness, Melissa Carone, sounded intoxicated.

She was slurring words and juxtaposing syllables, which are symptoms of intoxication.
